currently i have my late 2011 macbook pro on internet recovery mode and its been on white screen for at least 20 minutes. also i can hear the fan. is there a way to safely get out? do i just hold the power button to turn it off?

Yeah, just hold down the power button and disconnect the power cable from it until it force shuts down. Otherwise, try the usual stuff: reset smc/pmu and zap pram, then plug an Ethernet cable into it, and try Internet Recovery Mode again....
