No sound on MacBook Air. After restart it returns. But then gone again after sleep.

The sound on my MacBook Air often stops working. There is no sound coming from the speakers. When I restart, the sound returns. But it will then stop again, usually after waking from a sleep. Is this a hardware glitch? Any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening are appreciated!
