Suddenly my iPhone6 no longer displays sent messages. When I go to system preferences and check email I am asked to set up an iCloud email account. I don't want one. I just want (as before) to have my sent emails show up on both my desktop and my iPhone6.

This is NOT the problem. When I go to preferences and try to re-instate email so that sent emails will display on both my desktop and my iPhone, I'm asked to set up an iCloud email account. I don't want an iCloud email account!
Make sure that your email account (iCloud, gmail, etc) Is signed in in your settings. perhaps you got logged out.
