Ipod Touch stuck in a boot loop

Have an old ipod touch. It is now stuck in an endless loop that I can't fix. Have tried holding the power and home buttons down with no change. Have also tried putting into dfu mode which worked once but the restore in itunes didn't have any effect. Now I can't seem to put it back into dfu mode. Is it dead?
