cannot mount Boot Camp in Disk utility in Mojave

After installing Win10 with Boot Camp Assistant (macOS Mojave), the Boot Camp partition does not show up in Settings --> Start Up Disk. Checking with Disk Utility, the Boot Camp Partition can been seen but greyed out - shown as not mounted. But clicking the Mount button cannot mount the partition.

Checking the Apple Support site does not seem to mention this as a known issue with Mojave or Boot Camp. But did see a number of variations of this issue in the Communities. But seems not having solved the problem.

I can boot to Win 10 or macOS by pressing Option key at Power Up. But I cannot specify startup OS within Setting --> Start Up Disk as the Boot Camp Disk / Partition cannot been seen / found.

I also cannot specify the startup disk in Windows by using the Boot Camp Control Panel as the Start Up Disk Tab does not show up. And the Boot Camp Control Panel has to be run within the Command Window with Administrator right otherwise there will be error message.

Would appreciate any tips or advice.

Following are my system details:

  2. Mojave (macOS 10.14.6), Win 10 64-bit (ver 1903, 1803, 1709) - tried a few version
  3. Boot Camp used to work well with Yosemite and Win 10

Update:

I removed the Windows / Boot Camp partiton based on your earlier . Reinstalled the Windows 10 1803 with BCA. (Still runing Mojave)

On the Mac-side: Now I can see BOOTCAMP volume on the Desktop. Disk Utility can see the BootCamp partition as mounted.

On the Windows side, after replacing the AppleControlPanel.exe with the 2018 version, I can now select whether to reboot to Windows or macOS. (original install version does not work)

Clicking the BootCamp icon on the bottom right of the Windows Task Bar show an option to "Restart in OS X" which does not work (in fact it should be "Restart in macOS"? ) Is there a cure for this?

That's a big progress! Thank you!!

Hi,
After replacing the 2018 version of AppleControlPanel.exe, now I can select re-boot to macOS of Win10 within WIndows 10! That's a relief! Tks!! Half of the issue solved. Only that the 2018 version of AppleControlPanel does not have the keyboard back light settiing as in the 2017 version. ;-(

Unfortunately, this is the side effect of using a different Model's Control Panel.

Thanks for directing me to the other discussion on "BootCamp not showing up in StartUp Disk" and "cannot mount Boot Camp Parition" within Disk Utility.
3. My Mojave was an upgraded from Sierra. I used to have Paragon NTFS for Mac when I was running Yosemite. Is this the reason for 2. ? How can I uninstall it? Will it solve the problem?

Paragon NTFS will cause issues with Startup Disks. See https://kb.paragon-software.com/article/204 for reference.

During this test, were there any references to Paragon? I assume you tried a Mount operation from Disk Utility and these are messages which are time-stamped after your Mount attempt.

Not sure if that MFT size is adopted by Win10?

It is supported and W10 will work, but the read-only NTFS driver that Apple supplies will not be able to mount it.

If you have a disk which can be erased for testing purposes, then

  • Boot into Windows
  • Format this disk as NTFS in Windows
  • Check if it mounts correctly in Windows
  • Post the output of fsutil fsinfo
  • Switch to macOS, try to mount the same external disk and test
  • The disk should support 4K block sizes

I found the MacBookAir 2019 Boot Camp Apple Control Panel is the same version number as my current installed one - 6.0.6100.0 Should I use 2018 model then?

This is what I have on a 2018 rMBP.

2. Will that for iMacPro or other models work?

Try the 2018 Model one.

3. Any difference between running "SetUp.exe" and just replacing the AppleControlPanel.exe ?

If you run setup.exe, it will try to install all 2018 drivers, which may not be valid. I recommend not using setup.exe.

The BootCamp partition was not removed before installing Win10 this time.

I boot-up the MacBook with a Bootable USB for Win10 by pressing Option during power up.

During the installation of Win10 I select the Format option to format before installing Win10 i.e. it is a fresh install with no previous files or settings preserved
