My macbook has a flashing question mark symbol after i turn it on.

My macbook has a flashing question mark symbol after i turn it on, i cant do any back ups nor re-install MacOS. what do i do? I sont have nay back ups anywhere. I cant even master reset my laptop either.

The flashing question mark indicates the computer cannot find its operating system which might mean the OS is badly damaged or that the drive is damaged. It sounds like you have tried to use Command R and/or Command Option R to boot into recovery but your post is short on details so I don't know what happen except that nothing good did.


So, restart with Command Option R (you'll need to be somewhere with WiFi) to do an Internet recovery. Then switch to Disk Utility and erase the hard drive. If you cannot find a hard drive to erase or if you get a message that the erasure failed you'll need to take the computer to an Authorized Apple repair center to have it looked at.

Thanks for your quick reply.


i have tried all of the options, tried master resetting it, got as far as the webpage to look for help. Cannot use a back up as I haven't backed it up. There's is nothing I can do.


other than throw it on the road, I will take it to a shop. Hopefully they can recover my files, as I already tried multiple times to master reset it without success.
