iPad Air 2 Wi-Fi
So, I did a hard reset to power off while still connected to my Mac. Then, powering up took me to recovery mode (if you just boot up and connect, it won't work. Error stating Mac can't connect to iPad).
Then once in recovery mode, avoid the Update option. Go for the restore. Once this is done, when the iPad reboots, select setup from new (restore won't work correctly at this point).
Once it's fully setup and configured as new, disconnect/reconnect to the Mac. Now initiate they restore of your backup file.
Once this is all completed... Sync as normal and let all the apps fully update themselves over the air.
It's a steaming pile of mess to get this working... But it all works for me now...
Hope this helps someone.
Only iPad Air 2 models seem to somehow be affected.
Do you want a better performing iPad Air 2, now, or have to continue to wait for an undisclosed period of time when Apple will issue an iOS point fix/patch release?
We're on day 2 of iPadOS and still no update patch from Apple, as yet!
The choice/decision, of course, is yours
My world is the same as yours.
I am MOSTLY the tech guy in my family, too!
It is what it is.
Again, only you can “make the call”.
This is why I never, EVER install ANY Apple iOS upgrades/updates on release day 1, EVER!
I have told most of my family members never to upgrade/update their Apple devices on day 1 release, too!
Best of Luck to You!
You need to get the button repair, I’m afraid.
Many things you have to do with an iPad are useless without it!
Either pay Apple’s out of warranty 60% cost for a replacement iPad, in lieu of an actual repair of forfeit any future support for that device from Apple and do a Web search for a third party repair center in your “local” area that specialises in doing repairs of Apple products and devices.
No choice and no other options until that hardware button is repaired or the iPad is replaced.
Best of Luck to You!

BTW, the genius said that the iPad Air 2 is getting to the end of its technologically useful life (processor speed vs OS demand = slower downloads, etc)...but, for what I use it (primarily reading books) it’ll serve me well...(I also have an iPad Pro 12” with keyboard and pencil.
Of course they are going to tell you that!
They ( Apple ) want you to purchase a new iPad!
I use both a 4-year old iPad Pro and an 8-1/2-year old iPad 2 every day!
My 8-year old iPad 2 is no speed demon, but at runs/workup data very acceptable performance level and about 1/2 the apps installed on this 8-year old iPad are still getting regular, daily updates.
Battery life is still fairly good, too!
I get between 5-6 hours of battery run time from that 8-year old iPad 2.
Still gets used on and off every single day, though.

I agree BUT he didn't try to sell me...he was just making an observation that with the increasing demands of the newer OSs and the slower speeds of the older chips, the performance will start denigrating. He said the same that you said, that he had an older iPad and it worked fine for what he used it for but it was much slower than the newer models.
I'm like you, I will continue to use my iPad Air 2 to read books, check weather, check email, etc and it will be fine. Although, I might upgrade to the newer iPad Pro because the newer Apple Pencil won't work with my older iPad Pro (and, I dislike the fact that I have to charge the pencil with a USB cable and I've already lost the little female-female connector once.
i actually use both of my iPads as creative/artistic sketchbooks with my iPad Pro being the tool where I go from sketchbook concepts to a more finalized , created concept/idea/image.
I have the most of tbe same apps ( different released versions/updates ) on both of my iPads.
I have been trying to follow this thread because I also have the issue of my iPad Air2 not accepting my passwords and not being able to connect to my network.
I have no problem doing a reset and restore but I am unable to do so because when I select "Erase All Content and Settings" on my iPad, I get a "Verification Failure" error telling me there was an error connecting to the Apple ID server, which I am assuming is because I have no wifi.
I also get an error message on iTunes "iTunes could not connect to the iPad “iPad” because an error occurred while reading from the device."
Since I am not the most literate Apple person in the world, I don't know how to get through this crazy catch-22 of Can't erase and restore because my iPad cannot connect to the Apple server and not being able to use iTunes to erase and restore because there is an error reading my iPad.
Hoping someone can help me out with this.
Well, I had my on/off power button repaired today. Here goes trying to get this thing to work now... Likely try tomorrow to wipe it and follow Apples suggestion to have it plugged into itunes and reset it. Hopefully it works because that would be wasted cash on a button repair.

The Home button needed to be repaired, regardless.
The Home button is used for a lot of different things that if still broken, you would NOT be able to do.
Yes I have. I have scheduled a callback with Apple Support.
I've tried all these steps and still stuck at wifi login screen.
Same issue here. I am also using iPad Air 2 and after upgrading to 13.1 it will not connect to any WiFi networks protected with a password.
As well as the wifi connectivity problem, it's also worth noting that the Settings app is also REALLY slow in places.. grinding to a halt on certain things.
Hard reset is not helping. Lot's of folks have tried the same thing.
I have the much the same problem, but mine will not connect to iTunes for a Restore and it WILL receive Notifications but will not browse or provide any connectivity.
