Huge battery drain when receiving iMessages with iOS 13

This morning I was asleep. I received 51 iMessage messages from a friend of mine over the course of 67 minutes. This apparently caused the battery life of my iPhone 6S to go from 50% to 8%. Obviously pretty inconvenient. I've never seen this kind of battery drop from just receiving some messages with previous versions of iOS. Anybody else seeing this?

Protect & Prolong life of your iPhone's Battery:

  1. Put on Low Power Mode
  2. Put Auto Lock On (1 min):- with low power mode it will be 30 Sec
  3. Put Auto Answer Off
  4. Disable Push notifications for apps you do not use often
  5. Enable Auto Brightness:- Settings > General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Auto-Brightness [Enable]
  6. Manually lower brightness from Control Center
  7. If you Want to watch continuous Video. Stream it on TV or a Monitor
  8. Don't force close apps; Apps which are not on frontend screen are paused by the system to save energy. Apps require more energy to re-launch. Apps which are open in the background use large memory is a myth and quitting them is counterproductive
  9. Location services to be allowed only while using the app
  10. Set your iPhone to fetch email and calendar data from internet less frequently
  11. Turning off Background App Refresh
  12. Charge before it drops below 20-30%
  13. Try connecting to trusted Wifi where ever available in stead of Cellular
  14. Enable Airplane mode in areas with bad cellular and wifi coverage. Your phone keeps trying for reconnection with the missing / weak network. This uses lot of energy
  15. Switch off Wifi & Bluetooth while in Roaming or Not in Range
  16. Enable "Wifi Assist" : Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data > Wi-Fi Assist [Enable]
  17. Periodically Check your Battery Health (Settings > Battery > Battery Health)

As your phone was not plugged in (if it was there would be no battery drain) all of the iMessages were downloaded using cellular data, because Wi-Fi is turned off when the phone is locked. So the amount of energy consumed is based on the total size of the messages, which includes any attachments such as photos, and the strength of your cellular signal. A weak signal will use over 10 times the energy as the strongest signal.

Thanks for the thoughts. The messages were all very short, text-only messages. And the phone was at my house, where my cell reception is excellent.

This sort of thing has happened a thousand times in the past (phone getting ~50 short, text-only messages) with no appreciable drain in battery life. The only thing that's different is that I installed iOS 13 when it was released.

It probably had nothing to do with the iMessages then. If you just updated iOS 13 made a number of changes to internal data structures, which all had to be updated. That is most likely what caused the battery drain. The biggest change is to Reminders, which completely redesigned the database, and that conversion has been taking people a day or more.

I updated on September 19th, so the OS has had almost a week to do all its housekeeping.

I checked the Battery section of the Settings app to see what happened. Battery usage was minimal except for a huge drop between 6 and 7 AM. The Battery feature didn't list any active apps at that time. The only thing I can tell that was happening with my phone at that time was receiving a bunch of text (iMessage) messages.
