iPhone Photos App says "Not Enough iPhone Storage" for backup when there's 30GB free

I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max 64GB phone with a 2TB iCloud plan (which 1.1TB is free) and 30GB free on my phone. The Photos app will not back up because it thinks there's "not enough iPhone Storage." Has anyone else run into this problem? It's gotten worse the past 2 days. Previously, it wouldn't upload unless there was 20GB. Now offloading more apps and getting to 30GB isn't even enough.

I returned my 64GB iPhone Pro Max and bought a 256GB one and this bug is still an issue. Using only 40-50GB of my 256GB and I would still get the "Paused. Not Enough Storage" messaging and then after redirecting to Storage, it shows I have tons of space. This is still happening on iOS 13.1.3! I was shooting a video of my infant and that was cut off because this bug has caused my phone to think I really don't have space!

Yes, this is definitely an iCloud bug. I think it might even be specifically connected to the 2TB plan as I can reproduce this on multiple phones and iPads but people I know with smaller iCloud plans don’t seem to have this issue. @MikeWard1701 — contacting Apple directly isn’t a bad idea but this is beyond CS. Probably beyond some iCloud team’s engineering on-call to resolve too. They’ll probably need weeks of serious engineering effort to debug and fix and then potentially months more to schedule it as part of an OS update. I’ll still do it in an effort to nudge that trouble ticket into a microscopically more prominent position assuming Apple has “some” process for triaging bugs from customer feedback.

Apple seems to prioritise bugs it has never seen before or never anticipated.

I’ve been liaising with senior engineers via AppleCare Outreach over the last week for an issue I’m having with the Photos app on Mac OS.

(After upgrading to Catalina, my personally created albums and smart albums disappeared from Mac OS, but are still present in iCloud and in my iOS/iPadOS devices.)

So if it’s a rare issue and you’ve found ways to reproduce it, they’ll most likely want to speak with you.

Storage - iPhone or iCloud? My devices are 256GB storage. After I purchased a new iPhone and migrated the data from my previous phone there were two phone backups in Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Backups > Info.

After confirming the content had successfully migrated to the new iPhone, I deleted the older phone iCloud backup to recover 20GB of iCloud storage.

I also find that Podcasts keep growing along with audiobooks -- taking up space on my device. A 64GB device will be more like 60GB after the iOS is installed.

Good luck on your quest.
