iPadOS’ new Slide Over switcher is always blurry.

Hello Apple community

I started using iPadOS a few days before the official release by getting iPadOS 13.1 b4, and it worked flawlessly for the first few hours. But then I had this issue where the slide over switcher always seemed to be blurry. I brushed it off as being a beta issue, and thought it would be fixed by the release, but it wasn’t. I didn’t submit feedback because I couldn’t really come up with steps on how to reproduce it, as it seemed to be there out of nowhere and even a restart wouldn’t fix it.

Now on the release version of iPadOS, as soon as I got the update and went to try and see if this was fixed and it seemed like it was, but out of nowhere it started happening again, but this time a restart would fix it for a while.

I then started messing around with it to try and find a way to reproduce it and I got it to reliably happen. It becomes blurry every time I use the app exposé feature. I’ll have apps open on slide over, access the switcher and it will be normal. I’ll then use the app exposé feature once and when I come back to the slide over switcher, it will be blurry until I restart my iPad.

Now, what I wanted to know is the following: is there any way to fix this, even if it is a temporary fix, without having to restart my device every time? Is Apple aware of this issue and is it widespread or am I an isolated case? Could my iPad, some app I have installed or anything else other than iPadOS itself have anything to this with this issue?

Thanks in advance, and I hope we can get this fixed!

Some additional information: I’m running the latest version of iPadOS as of making this post, my device is a 2018 12.9” iPad Pro, 256gb Wi-Fi only.

I fixed it! I reset my iPad’s settings without deleting its files and it’s fixed! Having to redo all my settings will be a bit of a headache, but losing my backup and all my files and having to transfer them back to it would be a much bigger hassle, so I’m quite satisfied with this solution.

Thank you zmclearan for your help, and for making me aware of the fact that I should probably do a factory reset after a beta, so I’ll keep that in mind before going into another one in the future.

Let’s make this a lesson: don’t ignore the warning on Apple’s Beta Program website that tells you to backup your device before going into a beta folks!

Hello,

Did you perform a complete restore of your iPad after running the beta? If not then you will need to. I too was having this issue with the beta and I updated to the consumer build of iPadOS 13.1 and this issue still persisted. It wasn't until I full restored my iPad that this issue went away.

Hello,

It is indeed a HUGE pain! I spent about 20 hours yesterday restoring all of my devices and manually moving data over. You can try restoring from a backup although I don't recommend it as some of these glitches can be inherited through the restore process. For complete peace of mind you will want to perform a complete restore.

iPadOS 13's new external storage was helpful as I store all of my files in the Files application and was able to drag and drop my information onto the external hard disk. Then once iPad was finished restoring all I had to do was manually move my information back.

An update on that:

I just restored my backup onto my iPad and the issue persistis. Yikes. I’ll have to perform a full restore. So there’s your lesson kids: have a recent backup of your device before you go to a beta in case you need to go back to it!

Also, iPadOS 13.1.1 will probably come in a few days, I’ll try and wait for that to see if it fixes my issue, if it doesn’t, I’ll definitely go with the full restore.

I have the same problem with the iPadOS 13.1 slide over switcher becoming blurry. In order to correct the problem I have to reboot my iPad. I can correct the problem with a reboot. But then after awhile it becomes blurry again.

I could correct the problem by going to settings > accessibility > text size and then turning on reduce transparency. The slide over switcher was no longer blurry but the screen was significantly dimmed. So not really a fix.

Hello,

Thank you for the quick response! I didn’t do a full restore. It’s quite a bummer I’ll have to do it, but if it means it’ll fix this issue, I’ll do it gladly. But I’d like to ask one more question: can I restore my backup into my iPad after doing a full restore? I really didn’t want to lose all my files because of this issue!

Thank you once again! I’ll try the regular method of transferring my backup into the iPad, and if the issue persists I’ll have to manually transfer the files. For me it wouldn’t take as long as it did for you (20h, WOW) because a lot of my stuff is stored in the cloud, I’ll mostly have to get my pictures back and then all of my apps (which are all on 1 page folders so saving them by screenshooting shouldn’t be a big hassle).

I’ll update this post with a result of the backup transferring in a few hours when I’m done with it, so other people can check on it to see if it’s a viable option.

You are very welcome! I had to perform full restores on all of my Apple devices which is why it took ALL DAY! It gave me a change to play with the new TV app in macOS 10.15 while I waited for my data to transfer. Then again that's part of the fun of installing Apple's prerelease software. This year it went quicker because I could connect a hard disk and mount my network file share in Files.
