iOS 13.1 Bluetooth Keyboard: shift keys not working

Just updated my iPhone SE to iOS 13.1 and noticed strange behavior from Bluetooth keyboards: the Caps Lock key now switches languages for me, and the Shift keys don't seem to work at all - no capital letters except for the automated ones at beginnings of sentences, and no symbols above the number keys.

I've seen this behavior from two different keyboards from two different manufacturers (Logitech, Microsoft) on my iPhone SE. (Strangely, both keyboards behave properly when connecting to my iPad mini 4 running iPadOS 13.1.)

Has anyone else observed this behavior? And does anyone have suggestions for a solution?

I have also seen this issue corrected in the iOS 13.2 update. However, since I started this thread I have upgraded to the new iPhone 11 and I am not sure if this had an impact.

In addition not only does this address the shift key issue with my Logitech Bluetooth keyboard in WhatsApp but I no longer have to hit both the “Shift” and “Enter” keys to send a message. I only need to hit “enter”.

Hey guys...

Once you connect your BTkeyboard, go to Settings, General, Keyboard and you will see an option Hardware KeyBoard. In there, you will see a toggle that changes the Caps key to a Language key and is on by default. Flip the switch to off and you should be ready to go!

;-)

Ps. Careful to connect the keyboard prior to going into settings because I think the “Hardware Keyboard” option is not there unless you connect first.

Enjoy :-)

Ps 2. You guys should get a BTmouse too now with iOS 13. Makes the whole experience amazing. ;-)

I am having a similar problem as Bruce. I have a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard and ever since I upgraded to iOS 13 the shift key does not work under these specific circumstances -

Device - iPhone 8

Bluetooth Keyboard - Logitech K780

Operating System - iOS 13.1.1

Application - Only using WhatsApp

Issue - **** key doesn’t work and I cannot access any caps or special characters.

However, when I use iMessage I do not have the problem. Also, since this keyboard can pair with up to three devices I tried to reproduce the issue and it doesn’t happen when using those other devices - (Dell Precision Laptop, iPad Air running iOS 12).

Essentially, this is making my main messaging application - WhatsApp - unusable.

Anyone else having this issue?

PS - I removed and re-paired my BT keyboard and completed a hard reset of my iPhone 8.

I just finally upgraded to version 13 (13.2) and am finding it quite quirky/buggy. I, too, have a Logitech Bluetooth keyboard that I’m using with my iPad Pro and it’s always worked perfectly until this upgrade. Now things are laggy at times when typing, and in I typically use the Shift and arrow keys to select text but now the Shift key is not working when I try to use that key combination in the Messages app so I’ve lost that functionality which really slows me down when typing. Really hoping Apple investigates and resolves the issue.

I have a similar issue. On both the Apple Keyboard cover and the Logitech Smart Folio (two different units for troubleshooting) – often my command key will behave as if it is being pressed and held down. This has been an issue since 13.0 and persists on 13.3. Using an iPad Pro 11”.

The keyboards are not the issue. Must be software related.

I can remedy the issue temporarily by mashing the command key a few times or switching apps.

Tried calling Apple. They wanted me to buy a new cover. Bought the Logitech instead. Had the same issue. Talked to Logitech and they sent me a replacement at no cost (nice of them). But the issue persists on all keyboards I have tried.

I finally asked Logitech to see if they could bring it up with Apple as I am but a pleb.

Changing the Caps key did not help. I’m now on 13.3 on my iPad Pro and I have tried several keyboards (Logitech, Qwerkywriter, Apple, etc). The shift keys still do not work on all of them, even if I plug the keyboards in directly with an adapter, as suggested by one keyboard company. This has become a huge problem for me as I rely on the iPad for multiple writing projects, and the on screen keyboard just doesn’t cut it.
