Exponential Fade

I don't have a question I just want to say the automatic exponential fade/gain on audio tracks in iMovie is so aggravating. They should change it back to constant fade/gain— a straight line.

Hi,

I confess that I have never been aware of an "automatic exponential fade/gain" issue that you mention. To my knowledge audio clips do not automatically fade unless the fade is embedded in the clip itself. Are you talking about the fades that can be imparted with the fade handles at the ends of audio clips? There is also another way to fade by holding down the Option key and adding dots to the horizontal volume line. Then you drag each dot to adjust the fade as you want.

When you use the dots are you still finding that the fade is "exponential" and not straight line?

From dot to dot, it should be a straight line. That's basic sound editing. Instead the audio drops very suddenly. You shouldn't have to use multiple dots to bypass an inefficient feature in the software.

Here is a picture of a five second fade that drops at the end. And even if you dragged that point five minutes out it would still drop drastically within the last second.
