USB keyboards don't work with a USB C adaptor on 2019 Macbook Pro

I have now tried two USB keyboards using a USB C adaptor that works for other devices in my Macbook Pro from 2019. Neither works. I have tried all the debugging techniques.

I can't use a USB C keyboard because these are fully split/separated ergonomic keyboards that are not made in any other form than standard USB. I have never had any trouble with a USB decide through these adaptors.

How can I make one of these keyboards work? If they can't work, I have to abandon my Macbook and get another computer as a medical necessity.

Please don't make me use Linux/X Windows, it would ruin my life!

I've read blog posts where these identical models were used with late model Macs, so it shouldn't be a compatibility issue.

The models are: R-60 Split Ergonomic Keyboard, Mistel MD600. The R-60 is the only electronic keyed split keyboard on the market that I've found. The MD600 is what I tried next. In case it is the USB --> USB C adapter, I ordered a $16 Apple adapter.

I held the power button down for 10 seconds after shutting down to try to reset the SMC or whatever. It didn't help. Under system report the bottom 3 USB buses are empty.
