Apple will NOT release ANY major security updates for your 1st gen iPad Air, any longer!
iOS 12.4.1 will be the end of the road for your 1st gen iPad Air, UNLESS some special security circumstances arise where Apple MUST issue a specific security release to ALL older iDevices!
zmclearan is incorrect about this!
You can continue to use that iOS 12.4.1 version of iOS Safari for, perhaps another year, or so, but you would be far better off seeking out a third party Web browser that are still compatible with iOS 12 and earlier that get constant app updates regardless of the current iOS supported by Apple.
Lots of thrid party Web browsers available that are still fully supported by iOS 12 and earlier.
Best of Luck to You!

Today Apple released a security update for older non-supported devices.
iOS 12.4.2
iPad Air (1st Generation)
iPad mini 2
iPad mini (3rd Generation)
iPod touch (6th Generation)
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
Hello,
While Apple no longer supports iPad Air (1st Generation) in their newer system software version, if there is a major security breach historically Apple will publish a minor update. All browsers on iPad still use Safari as the backend so by using Chrome or Firefox you are technically still using Safari technology.
If you want to start using another third party Web browser, now, that is just fine and dandy.
If you are comfortable with using Mozilla Firefox for iOS, go ahead and use it!
Mozilla did a very good job of delivering an almost exact desktop version of Firefox for iOS, so that is fine.
I use three Web browsers, myself, with Firefox being one of them.
So great!
Make sure to update your iPad to iOS 12.4.2.
That is what I am referring to. Historically if a major security flaw has been found Apple will release a minor update, even for unsupported (non-obsoleted) hardware.
Still would not keep using that iOS locked version of Apple Safari for any extended length of time.
So I’d be wrong in believing that it wouldn’t be secure now it’s not supported by the fact I can’t upgrade to iOS 13 ? I had read that I should use an alternative browser such as Firefox where it will have the security updates.
Sorry I didn’t get back sooner, I hope it doesn’t appear rude. So MichelPM would you say it would be prudent to use the Mozilla Firefox app as the browser and forgo Safari or not because I’m a little confused after the previous advice ? many thanks for all of the earlier answers to you both.
Hello,
You will find that Safari is still the best web browser for your iPad Air (1st Generation).
Thanks
You are welcome.
Very nice!
You can use Safari. iOS 12 is not outdated yet, all the apps work with iOS 12 and Apple just released 12.4.2 for your 1st gen iPad Air.
