Music purchases
It looks like if I want to purchase music from Apple Music like I used to from iTunes, I need a subscription to Apple Music first. I’m hoping this is wrong.

It is wrong, you can purchase whatever you want using the iTunes App.
Apple Music is a subscription service to listen to music for as long as you’re subscribed. You use the music app for that
