settings crashes in ios13 on ipad

The settings app crashes constantly and faster than I can reset any settings. Using iPad Pro 9.7 inch from 3years ago. Used to occasionally crash in iOS 12.4 but only occasionally. Any known fix. Other apps appear to be fine but I am can not change any settings

Hello,

Try resetting iPad's settings in Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. Be certain you do not select Erase All Content and Settings as this will erase all of your information. It is a good idea to perform a backup of your iPad prior to resetting its settings.

I had the same problem, on the same model.

Potential resolution: I deleted every 32-bit app on the iPad. The problem has not appeared since.

Method: I went through all my apps and deleted any that either needed to be updated, or that crashed.

Logistics: With 400+ apps, it took a couple of hours. I made life easier by avoiding apps which I had used fairly recently. I had a list of 32-bit apps (from iOS 11 – apparently not available in iOS 13), which helped me to double-check that I had got them all.

Background: I was able to access the logs via iMazing – the logs I was interested in were called "Preferences-yyyy-mm-dd-hhmmss.ips". In each, the crashing thread was named "Dispatch queue: com.apple.preferences.spotlightIndexQueue". The fault in this thread, each time, was "esr: 0x56000080 Address size fault". This is similar to the problem as described by @TheOriginalZamfield.

I wondered if preferences was trying to build its list of apps, expecting 64-bit apps and failing to deal with one (some, or all) 32-bit app(s). Apple support hinted at a confirmation, saying that this was a known problem, and they would escalate to a more-senior tech if it persisted after updating all apps.

The following had no apparrent immediate effect: Restart. Hard reset. Update while in "recovery mode". Deleting a few 32-bit apps.

I removed the following 32-bit apps (list may be incomplete):

I had this problem on my phone and also on my iPad.

I went through a few steps to resolve for my phone, still haven't got around to my iPad yet.

Turns out com.apple.preferences.spotlightIndexQueue threads kept crashing. I suspect something bad in the queue threw an uncaught exception. Seems like it was an integer when it was expecting a string, but I cannot completely confirm.

What I did:

  • backed up the phone, then used icloud.apple.com to remote wipe it, since I couldn't disable find my iphone in settings.
  • restored from backup. This did NOT fix the issue, but did point me in what I think is the right direction.
  • A few days later I plugged my device into a machine with xcode and looked at the device logs. (you can also sync with iTunes and see them on your machine in Crash Reports in your ~/Library folder.
  • Opened settings and let it crash a bunch of times to capture lots of recent logs. All had the spotlight thread die, no other issues.
  • Noticed a bunch of reports from earlier that were just labled "unknown". The looked like reinstallation related hiccups, but I removed a bunch of these apps just in case.
  • Talked to support, who couldn't do much in chat, so I scheduled a call back with a senior support person later that night.
  • Got home and backuped and synced my phone again.
  • Senior support wanted to see if it was my itunes/icloud account, or my hardware that could be causing this, so they asked to wipe the phone and set it up as new.
  • I used icloud.apple.com to remote wipe again, then set up the phone as new.
  • No crashes, so then I logged into itunes and icloud.
  • Still no crashes, so then I restored from backup.
  • Still no crashes, but I haven't reinstalled any of the apps that I deleted.

I don't know for sure if any of those deleted apps were the culprit, but I can't think of anything else that could have caused this.

Goodreader, Sketchbook, The Piano, iHandy Leve, TV Guide, last.fm have all been upgraded to 64-bit status since iOS 11.

32-bit apps STOPPED working in iOS 11 and later. iOS 11 was the introduction of the all-64 bit iOS and all-64 bit apps.

The apps I listed that you had all have new 64-bit versions.

Try reinstalling them as new apps.

Ckeck your other apps listed to see if there are new 64-bit versions and have been updated recently.

Say around between 2017-2019.

Thank you.

I include the list here because they were part of the changes inbetween a not-working settings app, and a working settings app, in case that helps someone else resolve their issue.

I already had (some of) the updated versions, but I hadn't removed the 32-bit ones. It may be worth noting here that some may not have been updated since they were migrated from an iPad 1.

It's interesting that with some (for instance, GoodReader), the 32-bit app did not upgrade directly or automatically. The 64-bit app needs to be downloaded as a new app, so must be searched for explicitly.

If I could get into settings this is what I would have done!

I cant even restore to a previous version from the computer as it requies going into settings to turn off find my ipad.

I need command acces from the computer to the ipad to force a factory settings reset.

Initially it was os 13.1 but have now installed ios 13.1.2 and no change.

The ipad and all other apps work fine I dont have access to settings and I need that access.

I have the exact same problem on iPhone and have not found a solution either. I followed a few guides about how to fix a crashing settings app on iOS 12 but that did not help either.

Here are a few questions that could help us to narrow down the problem:

  • How many apps do you have installed on your iPad? (I have about 300 on my iPhone - at some point I thought it had something to do with the Settings app loading the app specific preferences)
  • Do you have apps from a second iTunes Account (friends/family) installed on your iPad? (My iPhone keeps asking for the password of an old account I have no access to anymore)

Thanks for you help and good luck fixing it.
