GPS accuracy iOS 13 and/or 11 Pro Max

Has anyone else noticed any recent issues with their GPS accuracy on their 11 Pro or maybe even iOS 13. I can’t tell if it’s because it’s a new phone or the updated iOS but it seems when using map apps my gps location keeps moving around a lot when I’m stationary and it can’t seem to get a fixed location. Also seems it’s a bit off to the north about 20-30ft.

Hey DexterII,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! I definitely depend on Maps to work as expected, and I want to make sure you're able to depend on that as well! I am happy to provide some information and tips for resolving issues with Maps.

Based on the information you shared, I believe the resource below will be helpful in troubleshooting this Maps/GPS concern.

Thanks again, and have a great day!

Hi,

I´m having the same problem with my "normal" iPhone 11 (iOS 13.2.3). While moving, the accuracy is fine so far. But after I come to a standstill, my phone loses its position. This is especially visible within the TomTom Go app. As soon as I don´t move anymore, TomTom Go loses the uplink to the satellite (seen on an arrow that changes from blue to gray) and the map circulates like crazy. On Google Maps and also on the application of Apple itself, I "fly" sometimes over houses away.

To solve this problem, I even reset my iPhone completely. So far without success. My old iPhone 7 Plus (also iOS 13.2.3), however, makes no problems.

I bought a new XS Max and the GPS keeps failing... it came with 13 and I’ve done all updates to 13.2.3. It has never worked properly.

i have done all the resets and reloads that we’re supposed to fix this. No luck. I even had a warranty replacement done with same results.

What I see is that the GPS stops updating position and COG after a few minutes. It is particularly flakey at walking speeds or idle speed in my boat.

It happens on all my GPS based applications... Navionics Boating, Speedometer, GPS Fishing, Maps and Google Maps. The position starts correctly after wild swings of the COG heading... then it just locks up. No position or COG headings at all.

My old iPhone 7+ with 13.2.3 with those applications works perfectly. This is an XS problem Apple.

I get that to a point, however they would all be using the same logic to pin point a location then. But they all varied so significantly.

A friend of mine with an iPhone also standing next to me was no where near correct and about 60ft more north of us at the time.

My work phone almost puts the point on my head even inside a building. (Galaxy something) and doesn’t keep jumping all over the place when stationary.

AppleCare ran a diagnostics and found no issues of course.

I saw your post was more than 2 months old so I was wondering if you still experiencing the same issue. I have a 11 pro max and I swear to God I felt like throwing it out of my car. The gps is so messed up. I drive for Uber part time and the gps is one of the most important things. It keeps bouncing everywhere except for where I’m actually at. It’s completely impossible to follow. I even updated to iOS 13.3 and it’s still happening. Restarting the phone sometimes fixes it but not always.

I opened a case and had my XS Max replaced. Same issue... no change.

Apple runs diagnostics and declares no issue. That is a total cop out. Anyone that writes diagnostic software knows that the failure mode has to be anticipated or the diagnostic will not find the failure. Just because the diagnostic says GPS is ok, it is not.

I am seriously considering going back to Android. XS Max gps is unreliable at best; not functional as a reality

Do Community Specialists actually read the posts? I know Apple wants us all to use Maps rather than GoogleMaps despite its bugs even after all these years. But the problem the original poster had is with is with GPS generally, not with Maps.

I just got a new iPhone 11 Pro, and the GPS is ridiculously buggy, showing me continue down roads after I've turned, freezing for long periods while driving fast, roads disappearing, etc. A real downgrade from my old phone! Which thankfully I still have.

Please, tell your bosses at Apple to focus on improving basic functionality, or at least not ruining basic functionality, before adding more unwanted features or untested tech.

I'm willing to bet a LOT of people would love a product that "just works," like Apple prided itself on back in the old days.

I have opened a case with Apple Support A MOMTH AGO they said the engineering team wanted me to give them a bunch of informations so I gave them all the details they asked for.

What cellular provider was I using?

Does my car have tint on the windows?

Do I us XM radio?

Do I have Bluetooth on?

Do I have date and time set to automatic?

Does my car have GPS is it stable on the navigation in the car system?

Do I live near an airport?

and on and on..

Suggested I turn OFF automatic time zone setting and automatic time and manually set the date and time to see if that helps

Told me they would call me back at so and so time. NOTHING I've called back several times to ask about what's going on with my case have told me 4 different times an advisor will call me back at such a time Apple HAS NEVER returned a call to me and I have set aside time they told me they would call each time to talk to them.

They don't ever care enough to find out if the suggestion about the date and time helped.

Apple could care less I paid so much for a "Pro" product just like they could care less about the customer having the best cellular connection possible they could have just paid Qualcomm years ago so their customers could have a better modem and experience only when they had no choice did they pay them.

Do you think apple cares about one person like me calling over and over because I'm getting lost because I traded in my iPhone 8 which had no gps problem for the best phone ever a "pro" model?

Apple won't even give you a refund when you want to go back because you GPS WORKS WORSE THAN IT DID I hope someone does not make a wrong turn into a lake because they can't get their act together more and more people are saying same thing I am.

Sorry I'm fed up doing my part for apple by paying for a phone and expecting the gps to work as good as my older phone then giving them information about a problem spending hours on the phone letting them install services on my phone to monitor my gps and NO ONE CAN CALL ME BACK like they promise? Like my time is not as valuable as theirs?

I also have an iPhone 11 Pro having these problems.

I agree it is ridiculous to "upgrade" and have basic functionality that we have come to rely upon, like GPS, become far less usable. In fact it's a safety risk.

I called AppleCare and they suggested turning off my Wifi. Not a very encouraging suggestion, after years of telling us Wifi increases GPS accuracy.

Hi guys

I have exactly the same problem. I’m on 11 pro max and the last iOS 13.3 and I noticed exactly when it does that issue of being not accurate.

In fact, when your iPhone is just in cellular data (3/4G) the accuracy is really bad (10/20km) and that is not normal it is probably an iOS bug (I hope so). To solve it, just activate the WiFi without connecting to any WiFi router, the accuracy will be back to normal.

i don’t know why this solution works but it is convenient cuz the WiFi uses battery even when you don’t use it ...

i hope  developers will fix it soon

Everyone should pay $3 and get the app GPSdiagnostic. It is invaluable. It shows that it takes up to a minute for my hiking app Guru Maps Pro to acquire the satellites to an accuracy of + - 20 feet. When I allowed this time and started my track I did not get any weird points on it. Satellites were consistently about 80%. In the car running Google Maps it was more like 50% and accuracy was about + - 50 feet.

For the Uber driver - get Apple to replace the phone. I have had almost no problems with Google Maps. Occasionally it gets off, but not often.
