GPS accuracy iOS 13 and/or 11 Pro Max

Has anyone else noticed any recent issues with their GPS accuracy on their 11 Pro or maybe even iOS 13. I can’t tell if it’s because it’s a new phone or the updated iOS but it seems when using map apps my gps location keeps moving around a lot when I’m stationary and it can’t seem to get a fixed location. Also seems it’s a bit off to the north about 20-30ft.

Hey DexterII,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! I definitely depend on Maps to work as expected, and I want to make sure you're able to depend on that as well! I am happy to provide some information and tips for resolving issues with Maps.

Based on the information you shared, I believe the resource below will be helpful in troubleshooting this Maps/GPS concern.

Thanks again, and have a great day!

Replacing the phone won't help. iPhone 11 owners (including myself) have been noting this issue for months and there still hasn't been a fix, even for those who've replaced their phones. The GPS-based apps (including running ones) have been horribly inaccurate since I've "upgraded" from an iPhone 7. There was even some small coverage on this issue in December from some of the Apple blogs (e.g. 9to5 Mac).

It's unclear when Apple will address this...or even if they will, as they haven't made any acknowledgement of it. Would be great if we could identify a path for elevating this issue as I'm frankly quite disappointed in my purchase and Apple because of this.

Same problem here with my iphone X. Never had any kind of GPS problem so far in my old Iphone SE, changed to this one and on the first travel attempt i lost myself. The signal freezes many times, it has a failure accuracy by more than 70m taking me to other streets. For example in a freeway it constantly moves to secundary parallel roads.

Have anyone ever considered being a sim card issue?! because in the open air with only 3G/4G and no WI-Fi the problem is more serious.

@mrich75 - have you tried turning off WiFi? Some of us have noticed much improved GPS once WiFi has been turned OFF. Not a fix, but at least a workaround until they fix it. I too have had multiple tickets with Apple for this and got referred to the engineers. On my last call with them, they said they plan to include fix with next update, but were not sure when that would be.

This obviously won't help your GPS wackiness while sitting on your porch, but I'll share an observation: I borrowed a friend's Range Rover for a few days, and the GPS in my iPhone 11 Pro while driving that car was EXTREMELY erratic. I returned to my car and the GPS returned to normal-range inaccuracy (not too bad). Now I don't want Apple just blaming car companies like they did with connectivity for years, because they should have their own systems working. But I've experienced directly that certain cars seem to interfere with the signal.

If you are sitting on your patio most likely the phone does not have a clear view of the sky in all directions. Your phone needs to be able to see at least 4 satellites to get an accurate position. As the satellites move very fast, your phone will see different satellites every few minutes. The erratic track is a typical symptom of incomplete GPS coverage. Get the free app GPSDiagnostic, which will tell you (among other things) how many satellites your phone is receiving at any given time.

It’s April, have got a brand new iPhone 11 Pro and I have exactly the same problem with my GPS.

Turning off the WiFi does not bring any advantages to my GPS tracking accuracy.

I guess it’s not just a software issue, I think it’s because Apple is using a new GPS chip in the X-series iPhones. I am really happy with the image quality of my new iPhone but I am also rather disappointed about the GPS accuracy. This should not happen with a >1000$ phone.

Shall I give it back or really wait for a GPS fix software update that maybe will never come? I do not know.

I would give it back I think the GPS chip is included in Intel's modem everybody says that I break up during all my calls and they can barley hear me becaue it breaks up so bad I've never had this problem with my iPhone 8 if you use Uber you're constantly get this message that your phone is disconnected from the network even though I've been to AT&T and they say nothing is wrong with the SIM card.

I bought mine on October 6 I called Apple two weeks later because I thought a software update would fix it they Apple engineers installed software and wanted to collect data from my phone and said they would call me back to let me know whether I should return my phone within the 30 days, nobody ever called me back to tel me so now I'm stuck with the phone and to get a warranty replacement they have to put a $1200 hold on my credit card because none of the stores are open

It's impossible to use with Uber the GPS is so badI'm extremely happy with the image quality too but that doesn't negate the functionality of it i use my GPS more than pictures

I will try to get a replacement phone.

Navigation in my car with google works fine, but tracking my hike is terrible as soon as I stop for a break. My last 18km tour was therefore 1-2 km longer tracked than it actually was. I just want to have a accurate GPS quality as I have spent more than 1000$ for it. Even the much cheaper iPhone SE has better GPS tracking. I will tell you if the exchange will lead to better results at the end (and I really hope it will, as only a few people complain about this problem)

I had this problem with the app Guru Maps Pro, but I found that if I let the GPS acquire for about a minute or two then the track would be OK. I used the app GPSdiagnostic to tell when the satellites are all acquired. And Guru Maps Pro uses GPS filtering, which is settable by the user. For those who see weird stuff with their hiking or running apps - do these apps do any GPS filtering? I would bet that apps like Google Maps do use GPS filtering.

I have had zero problems with Google Maps in the car. I do notice with GPSdiagnostic that the satellite data is worse in the car than outside. No surprise here, since you are enclosed by metal.

I do think this problem is real, but I guess my phone is slightly better than some folks' phone. But look into GPS filtering for hiking and running apps. It is interesting that redmonk78 had no problems in the car (I assume Google maps or Apple maps) but did with the hiking app. I suspect the hiking app had no filtering.
