How do I encrypt a single file such as a .xlsx, .docx, etc. without using file vault to create an entire partition?

That helps with encryption of .pdf files. But I want to encrypt a .xlsx file, a .docx file, a .png file, etc. without having to acquire and install an app to get the job done.
