Can I use my first generation Apple Pencil to mark-up Maps in iPadOS? If so, how?

Can I use my first generation Apple Pencil to mark-up Maps in iPadOS? If so, how? I understand that one of the new features in iPadOS is the ability to mark up whatever is on your iPad screen using an Apple Pencil. The feature says to swipe up from either the left or right lower corner with the Apple Pencil but when I do that in Maps, it just moves the map around. I would like to be able to mark up a particular map and then take a screen shot of it. Thanks,. Bob

It is not a feature in all apps. You should open iBooks, go to the store, search for iPadOS 13 and download the manual. The markup toolbar is available in supported apps.

From page 152 of the iBook version of the iPadOS 13 manual:

”Use Markup

Draw in apps with Markup on iPad

In supported apps such as Messages, Mail, Notes, and Books, you can annotate photos, screenshots, PDFs, and more using built-in drawing tools.”

How did you take the screenshot? I use my Apple Pencil on my 10.5” iPad Pro and with the pencil, swipe up diagonally from the lower right corner and it snags a screen shot into the markup editing pane with markup menu.

Once marked up, tap done and then save to photos to keep it, or discard it. That works for me in every Map app I have.

Hello,

Have you updated your iPad to iPadOS 13? If this feature still is not working then take a screenshot. You will then be able to markup the screenshot.

OK. Thanks for the tips guys. I sent the screenshot of the map area I wanted to mark up from Photos to Notes and was able to mark it up in Notes. It would be nice to be able to mark up maps natively directly in the Maps app but this method gets me where I need to be for now. Thanks again. Bob

You’re welcome. With the beta I had tried doing it with my finger and it never worked when the Pencil was paired to the iPad Pro (which makes some sense once I realized it).

Yes, I have an iPad Pro 9.7 that has been upgraded to iPadOS 13.1. I took a screen shot of the map (from Apple Maps app) that I wanted to mark up but I still wasn't able to mark up the screenshot with my Apple Pencil.

To be clear, I opened up the screenshot of the Map in Photos but wasn't able to mark it up. I didn't see the little Apple Pencil icon that is in Notes and swiping up with the pencil from either the left or right-hand lower corner didn't work, either.
