How do I get animated GIFs to run in apps like Preview or MS PowerPoint?

I have an animated GIF that "runs" fine if I simply use the space-bar to open a preview window. However, as soon as I open it in "Preview" (either directly or from that preview window), it becomes a collection of static gifs and nothing I do makes it run. Same if I import it into MS Powerpoint (16.20 - 365 office subscription). It does run inside Keynote (but I don't want to have to convert my whole presentation), but not in QuickTime. Is there any rhyme or reason as to which apps recognize and properly render an animated GIF and which don't? Is there any way to coax the latter? Is there a way to convert it to a format that all software recognizes as a "movie"?
