Screen goes dark

For the past two weeks or so, the screen on my Macbook Air (13 in early 2014) running Mojave 10.14.6 suddenly goes dark I can still sometimes see through it and things like "force quit" and restart remain active. There is usually about a 1 and 1/2 inch vertical stripe down the center of my screen. After many tries to restart and relaunch the finder-- which mostly doesn't work, it jeventually ust comes back. Can someone tell me why this happens and how can I make it stop-- or make it come back to normal more quickly? I was wondering if this has to do with the day/night setting in desktop or screensaver. (I am always set to daytime.). Thanks for any ideas.

Luis Sequeira1-- A loose cable is definitely is the problem! Although I have not yet brought it in for service— after a week of reinstalling operating systems and rebooting in recovery mode-- it is clear that it is not a software issue! Suddenly today i saw that the slightest shift in the angle of the screen can either cause the problem, or clear it up immediately! I am relieved to know what the issue is and can work with it until I am able to bring it in for repair. Thanks for your diagnosis, it is spot on.
