Transferring iPhone Data Via iCloud

Hi, I am upgrading from my iPhone 6 Plus to an iPhone 11 next week. I'm going to be trading in my phone in advance before I get the new phone so I have already backed up everything via iCloud. However, I have a few questions about the transferring process.

1) When I am setting up my new iPhone and am requested to sign into my Apple ID to retrieve my backup, will I get a verification code sent to my other iOS devices that I have to enter in? Because the problem is that I am trading in my old iPhone which leaves me with no iOS/Mac device to retrieve the verification code.

2) Does iCloud backup everything? I ran into issues a few years ago where I was upgrading from a 5S to a 6+ and it didn't transfer everything completely. Like I know iCloud won't backup the apps on my phone, only the app data but like Notes, Photos, Reminders, Calendar, Health App, etc. will all be backed up right?

3) I know there is another transfer method like direct transfer or I forget what it was called but as I am trading in my old phone I want to make sure EVERYTHING is backed up before I restore it onto my new phone as I won't be able to access my old phone after I get my new phone due to trade-in.

4) Is there anything I need to do on my old phone? Like other than to reset the device, is there anything else I need to do, like unlinking the iCloud/Apple ID lock or something before I trade it in?

5) Is there anything else I need to know or should do before trading in my phone and restoring it on my new phone?

Thank you for your help.

Hello ethan2640,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I see from your post that you have a few questions about how to prepare for your new iPhone before it arrives, since you will be trading in your old iPhone first.

When you setup your new iPhone with your Apple ID, with two-factor authentication enabled, normally you would use another iOS device or Mac signed in with your Apple ID to receive a verification code. However, if you do not have another device near by, there is another way to sign in with your Apple ID. When promoted at sign in, you can select the option "Didn't get a Code?" and you can receive the code via a text message or a phone call. For this to work, it is important that you have your trusted numbers updated on your Apple ID account. Check out the following articles for more details:

Two-factor authentication for Apple ID

Get a verification code and sign in with two-factor authentication

With regards to what is contained within an iCloud backup, take a look at the article called About backups for iOS devices. iCloud backups and iTunes backups back up very specific things. The linked article will explain the differences between the two in detail.

Before you trade-in your old phone, it is recommended that you backup your device using the backup method that best suits your needs and you it is very important that you follow the steps in this next article:

What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

I hope this information helps you!

Kindest Regards.

Hello ethan2640,

Thanks for the reply.

You're absolutely correct. If your new iPhone is using your same phone number that is on your old iPhone, and it's listed as one of your trusted phone numbers, you'll receive a text message or an automated phone call to receive your verification code. I recommend having more than one trusted number linked to your Apple ID just in case to make sure you're able to receive a code at anytime in any given situation.

Kindest Regards.
