Migration Assistant refuses to repopulate a new APFS disk from an HFS+ Clone backup.

I read some previous posts about this problem, but Mig. Asst. doesn't seem to agree that it can move HFS+ files to a newly-formatted disk using APFS. The previous posts didn't seem to take that issue seriously-should I just drag and drop the files and folders by hand?

BDAqua, have you actually tried it? I find that once a disk is formatted APFS, that option is the only one available in Disk Utility. HFS+ is no longer on the menu. And how do I "let the OS handle the conversion to APFS later."? I can't turn up any way to do that without wiping the disk. The only way I have found around this can of worms is to drag and drop files and folders from my HFS+ backup to the APFS target disk. I'd rather use a more systematic method., like Migration Assistant, which knows where all the bodies of code are buried, and where to re-interr them on the target disk. But that isn't an option, thanks to Apple. Am I missing something here?

Well, OK. I tried it, and got nowhere. There may be ways around the problem that I am not aware of, but it appears that, once I formatted the SSD to APFS, there was no way to down-format to EFS+. I presume that the fact that I can't down-format from an APFS disk (or SSD) indicates that the controlling volume is, in fact, formatted as APFS. I don't know any sure way to inquire of a disk how it is formatted, although there may be one. Like you, I am working in 10.13.6, on a Mac Pro, so I want to set up one drive with Mojave, which I've done now. But I still have all of my backup files on HFS+ drives, which Migration Assistant refuses to touch. At least, the High Sierra Mig. Asst. refused. I shouldn't include Mojave in that. I'll finish and try it from Mojave. Who knows?
