Distorted display on Target display mode

iMac display is distorted when used as a target display of the 2012 MacBook pro (10.10.5) and MacBook pro (10.14.6).
The iMac is running 10.12.6.
Run Apple Diagnostic, the display looks normal throughout the entire test but it did not progress. The loading bar has no program.
Connecting the MacBook and iMac using a Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter that is purchased from the Apple store.
reset the SMC and NVRAM on the iMac
Anything else you can suggest to resolve this issue?
