Macbook Pro flashing bar across screen

My 2017 13" MacBook Pro periodically flashes a coloured horizontal bar across the screen, about 2/3 down and maybe an inch thick? It goes away quickly, and can happen a few times back to back and then not for a few days, although it has been getting more frequent. Any ideas on how to fix this or what this is?

That sort of display anomaly often implicates defective hardware.

You could try Apple Hardware Test / Apple Diagnostics, but there are only two possible outcomes and both lead to the same result: it may identify a specific failure which only Apple can fix, or it will conclude "no trouble found" when trouble clearly exists.
