update request times out
try to update my MacBook air to the newest mojave version and the update keeps timing out before it finishes. 335.7 mb of 1.25 gb is as far as the update gets before nothing else happens

Are you using WiFi to download, it is often better to use a cabled connection if you can, this will provide a quicker download and more stable connection.
What update was it that you wanted to download, you can also download the Supplemental Update 2 from here,

and if you want the Combo update Luis mentions,
https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2010?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
once the download completes double-click to install.
