New Yahoo account - "imap.mail.yahoo.com” on the default ports timed out

Hello!

It seems I'm blocked from adding any emails on my MacBook Pro (High Sierra). I've tried:

1) Turning on/off computer

2) On/off router

3) Allowing Yahoo on my ISP

4) Also tried getting Gmail on instead but get same results

I used to sort these problems out using "Assist me" which has sadly been taken off

If it's of any consequence, the iCloud imap is also Offline - I dont know if I've done something to that or if it was always Offline.

Is there any way of seeing (and changing if necessary) the imap ports - as only smtp is available?

I obviously don't know what I'm doing - can anyone please show me the way.

Many thanks

MacBook Pro

Unfortunately Apple has made it impossible to see or change server settings for any of the Auto setup choices, but do you thing these were the settings?

Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server

  • Server - imap.mail.yahoo.com
  • Port - 993
  • Requires SSL - Yes

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server

  • Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com
  • Port - 465 or 587
  • Requires SSL - Yes
  • Requires authentication - Yes

Your login info

  • Email address - Your full email address (name@domain.com)
  • Password - Your account's password
  • Requires authentication - Yes

Yahoo has been most unreliable forever, & I even have all mail from Yahoo blocked since it's great for spam.

No, wasn't going to recommend it as most will interfere with Internet related things sooner or later.

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report...

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck.

There is also Malwarebytes...

Hello - thanks very much for your reply.

That info is how I have it, apart from not knowing the imap.

What is strange though, up until last week (about 25th September) I have been accessing 4 Yahoo email addresses on my computer since APRIL. Then they all went offline - as did another business email address.

I have also tried Gmail addresses and still no luck.

If I could get Gmail working, I would gladly set it up

Anything further you could help with would be great - thank you

Well, let's start with gMail, works fine hear since inception.

Whereabouts is the problem with it?

Oh, a secret workaround needed sometimes is to use Other when setting it up, use all the correct info except for Servers, for that use a fake alisonmoss.net but with correct ports & authentication, after Mail fails to connect tell it to set it up anyway, then you can go back & change the servers to the correct ones.

Hello again,

Firstly when I got up this morning there were 2 emails from Google showing that it had afterall connected for incoming.

I did a couple of test emails to and fro. Incoming seems ok but outgoing it took ages. Just one email was sent - and when trying to send one again, Mail quit (this has happened before). Tried again and:

Cannot send message using the server Google

Connections to host smtp.gmail.com on the default ports failed

I also tried setting up the alias - the wheel just keeps going round and round - the text is shadowed and so nothing I can progress with there.

Am I right in thinking there's something messed up on my laptop (rather than anything external) - my iphone works perfectly with the yahoo emails - and family apple computer/laptop work fine with works and aol emails.

Thank you for your interest in my problem!

More things that may be useful:

I also cant make any emails work on Thunderbird - that actually states: "Failed to find the settings for your email account." This is for all different email addresses. This was before even putting in IMAP/POP3 details.

A new Software Update wont download. It shows "48 kb of 1.88GB - calculating" And then it times out after about 5 mins

On the Etrecheck - I have got rid of Adblock and a couple of other things I had on Firefox

It shows there's only about 1GB memory - I guess that's a problem? I'm deleting photos as I've been putting quite a lot on recently - Could this be a problem?

Here's the Etrecheck result:

Hope this is helpful - and thanks again

Adblock - I did but put it back on (as Apple’s app rather than a Firefox add on). Ads are too frustrating. I’ll take it off again in the morning

I didn’t realise the LaunchDaemons was to be removed. I’ll do this tmrw too

Actually - I presumed Adware meant Adblock. Am I wrong?

I downloaded Clean my Mac from the internet - will I be able to put this back on? This is my 2nd one since getting a few years ago. Isn’t it necessary?

Thank you!

Apologies for all these questions, but I cant be the only one who used to have someone at home who did this for me!

I've trashed /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.ArtemisSearchDaemon.plist

I've deleted Adblock app

But Cleanmymac3 :-( Ticked Cleanmymac / then 'complete uninstallation' / uninstall.

I've deleted yahoo email address and restarted computer at various times through the day.

After not many minutes the blue circle stopped and right now (GMT 1900hrs) it's been stuck there for 7 hours. If I click 'stop' I am told:

'Do you want to stop the cleanup process before it finishes? Interrupting the cleanup will leave a certain amount of unnecessary items on your Mac."

Went into Applications / Cleanmymac - and it's dimmed with a circle and diagonal sign. I have left it like this wondering what to do next!

Help! (I think I'll leave Brave alone for the time being thanks - enough on with all this at the moment!)

Felt pretty good last night - having learnt about EtreCheck, Pastebin and FAF ... but - back to my Mail. Sadly still no luck there!

I set up the yahoo email again this morning after emptying trash and restart. Quite quickly, an email came in on my iphone from yahoo “New sign-in on Mac OSX”… but my laptop didn’t download any of my emails and it still isnt working

Connection Doctor re both SMTP and IMAP:

“Could not connect to this SMTP (IMAP) server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the “Use TLS/SSL” checkbox in the Server Settings tab of Account preferences.”

Weird? I'm hoping you are still hopeful of a remedy?

Also:

com.ArtemisSearchP.plist is also in LaunchDaemons - should I trash it or is this one OK?

And - although I trashed ArtemisSearchDaemon and it's gone - it is still active in Activity Monitor (as is ArtemisSearch)

Thank you again BDAqua
