Import Photos/Videos off Camera on Mojave (canon)

I have a canon camera, it takes photos, and videos. In the past, I would plug it in (usb cable) and up would pop iPhoto, and I would click the import button and it would save the files into a REAL FOLDER on my mac. Where I could then post-process the files with ease with any number of graphics programs. Rename them, file them in other folders, and manage them like any intelligent person would. No duplicates lingering, no billions of references left behind. Just clean, solid files to work with.

Now... on Mojave, I am having the damnedest time trying to figure out this once basic operation.

Seems in "Photos.app", it wants to nestle imports into some convoluted pile of crap library structure of its own devising. I cannot have it import to a real folder somewhere?

None of the apple documents about Photos and importing were of any help. They all go on the notion that I would want everything piled into one place with very little physical control of the files themselves.

How is this an improvement? Why does Apple keep removing nice clean power-user features from ... well... everything? Or, am I simply overlooking some console defaults command to change how Photos.app behaves, and it still truly lets me import directly to a real folder of my choosing, as raw files for me to manipulate at my whim?

• I do not want duplicates of every photo/video I import
• I do not want leftover references in odd places to dead or moved/renamed files
• I want to import to an actual folder (not some fictional folder located in a sidebar of some app)
• Connect device, get files off it (used to just be able to drag them out in Finder, but thats gone too)
• Maybe some 3rd party App I'm overlooking that does this
