Does the limited warranty cover screen malfunction replacement

Limited Warranty on iPhone Xr still active; does it cover screen replacement of a defective screen?

If the screen is defective, i.e., touch is not working, etc. then yes it is covered. If it is not working because it was cracked in an accident, scratched or water got into it that is not covered.
