• iPad (5th generation)
• iPad Pro 9.7-inch
• iPad Air 2
• iPad Air (1st generation)

These are all older iPad models that Apple no longer, directly, sells.

You would need to look at Apple's Website at their discounted, refurbished iPad models here for these particular iPad models.

Well, it claims that it is compatible with both iPad Air models (1 and 2), so either return it to the Apple store or contact the manufacturer about their claims and explain the problem to them.

Apple sells lots of third party products.

From that compatibility listing, if you want Apple Pencil compatibility, your only options are the iPad 6th generation or the 9.7 inch screen iPad Pro models.
