Bluetooth Headphones with Apple Watch Series 4 cellular

I have an Apple Watch Series 4 44mm Cellular. I have purchased a set of Bluetooth headphones to use with the watch. My watch and the headphones work great together when it comes to music and podcasts . However when trying to make a call or receive a call on the watch the device automatically kicks off the Bluetooth headphones and turns on the Apple Watch speaker phone . I would like to make and receive a call through the Bluetooth headphones with the watch independently from my iPhone.

the goal is to leave the house without my iPhone with just my Apple Watch Series 4 cellular and my Bluetooth headphones and be able to make and receive phone calls with just the 2 devices mentioned . Again I have the Apple Watch series 4 with an active cellular plan how do I make and receive calls via my Apple Watch with a set of Bluetooth headphones . The whole point of having a cellular plan on the watch is to be able to do this . I don’t want to have use the Apple Watch speaker phone every time I make a call. Am I really required to purchase the $150 + Aipods to be able to do this. Please help.

I could not get the above mentioned Bluetooth headset to work independently with Apple Watch phone calls. So Apple you have done it again I went out and bought myself some $150 AirPods. That being said they work seamlessly with the Apple watch as they are supposed to. I am highly satisfied!

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand from the information you provided that you’re unable to make calls on your Apple Watch using your Bluetooth headphones; I'd like to help.

You can definitely make and receive calls on a Bluetooth device via your Apple Watch. Your Bluetooth headphones will need to be capable of making calls (have a built in microphone) in order for this to work, as seen here:

The easiest way to test your headphones is to pair them directly to your iPhone and try to use them via your iPhone to make a call. If that works, you may need to unpair and pair them again to your Apple Watch and try making a call again.
