When my iphone XR is in lock mode, my incoming calls are silenced, no matter what i try to do in settings to counteract this. DND is OFF. This is horrible. I am a doctor and have already missed several pages because of this stupidity. is there a work around or do i need to get an android phone?

I resolved the issue. Apparently, when i put a protective case on my phone i inadvertently switched the silent switch on the side of the phone (above the increase volume knob) to silent mode (red bar showing on the side). When i switched it off, my phone now rings even in the locked mode.

Didn't even think of asking about that as it seemed obvious from your post that you checked that.

The steps I detailed above will prevent the phone reducing phone ringer volume using the volume buttons (by accident)
Try this:
Settings → Sounds & Haptics → under "RINGER AND ALERTS"
