How can I screen mirror the iphone to the iMac?

The easiest way to get your iPhone (or iPad) screen to show on your Mac is to do the following.

1. Plug the iPhone/iPad in to your Mac via a lightning to USB cable (or USB-C to USB-C for the very latest iPad Pro)
2. Launch QuickTime Player on the Mac
3. In QuickTime Player go to the File menu and select 'New Movie Recoding'
4. Make sure to select your iPhone/iPad from the drop down menu
5. You don't need to press the red record button unless you also want to save a recording of this

Plug in the Lightning cable from the iPhone to the Mac and open QuickTime.

Choose New Movie Recording and you'll see you iPhone screen.

I’m not aware of an in-built and supported way to mirror the iPad to the Mac.

AirPlay works to various “output” devices, but not to Mac.

Sidecar is a feature of macOS Catalina, and allows the Mac to use the iPad as a display, and as an input device. But not to Mac.
