Contacts merged

With the new update, when I try to text my husband’s work phone, it has merged his iPhone and his work phone (two different numbers) and I can’t chose which number I am texting to...? Anyone else?

How do I text the other number in the contact? I have two different numbers under one contact for a work phone and a personal phone number. I want to text the work number but even if I type It out specifically, I can't text it. Instead the messages/conversation from the other number under the contact are pulled up. How do I text this number without making a separate contact as that is annoying and makes the ability to add multiple numbers to one contact pointless. In the same vein, why can't I see which number I am texting in the messages app? It only shows the name of the contact so I don't know if I'm texting the right phone.

How to select which number to message when contact has an iPhone and an android? My husband has an iPhone for work and an android personal phone. I have both of his phone numbers under one contact. Before I updated my phone, I had two separate messages for his two phone numbers. Now they are merged. This is fine, but I want to be able to select which number I am messaging. It seems to always default to iMessaging his iPhone, even when the last message in the conversation is a text from his android. Even when I try selecting his android number in his contact card, it will still switch back to iMessage. Does anyone know a work-around for this, other than putting in separate contact cards for his two phone numbers? I like having them merged, I just want to be able to select the right number?!

How does the message app know which phone number to use for a contact that has multiple? How do you select which phone number to use for contacts that have multiple phones (work, home, mobile)? I select the addressee by typing their name. If you don't remember if they have multiple numbers, what order or selection criteria does IOS use? I would think it would use mobile, but that does not always work.

you can make two separate entries in your contacts to avoid merging them

Me too!!! My iPhone recently updated automatically and I deeply regret the auto update. This version (iOS 13.1.3) is a headache. Here it is, I have contacts that have more than one mobile number. Every contact that has multiple phone numbers listed under their contact, I go to text/iMessage them it’s all MERGED into one thread. On top of that, it goes to every phone they have or it picks automatically. I can not separate them UNLESS I make a different contact for each number which isn’t feasible. I tried to resolve this by trouble shooting on my own (typing in the number) and it still does the same thing. I spoke to Apple support to no avail.
