New MacBook Air Set Up - Issue With Update of Several Apps

In setting up my new (and first) MacBook Air, I ran into an issue, where the App Store indicated that I had five free App updates available, that first required that I "Accept" them. I will provide an update on what transpired and eventually resolved this.

With the Following Apps: Keynote, Pages, Numbers, iMovie, GarageBand, it appeared that I had updates that would not proceed following the set up of my new MacBook Air.

On the App Store, I selected my profile, and it indicated that I had to "Accept" the updates before they would proceed. I Accepted them. Following that, the section on Accepting no longer appeared, but I continued to have these 5 Apps with pending updates. Clicking on the Update button beside the Apps in the App Store Updates listing did not do anything.

Whenever I opened any of these Apps, it would say an update was available, and ask me if I wanted to go to the App Store. I did and selected Update, but with no effect.

Clicking on Update beside any of these apps in the App Store continued to do nothing. Opening/Closing the Apps and App Store, and Rebooting the computer (several times) did nothing. I searched on line and found a number of people had similar woes. It was suggested to remove and reinstall these Apps.

Using Garage Band as a trial, I moved the App to the Trash. To do this, I opened the Launch Pad, and dragged the App to the Trash Can. (Long press to start the Apps wiggling will not show an "X" option to Delete for these particular Apps, so dragging was the only way.) I then returned to the App Store. The Update for this App was still Pending. I selected Update again, but still no luck. I restored the GarageBand App from the Trash, just so I had everything as it was when I began.

I then found a MacWorld story on this that indicated that it was required to not only drag the App to Trash, but to then clear them from the trash. And then add the Apps anew from the App Store. Article Link: https://www.macworld.com/article/3429367/how-to-click-accept-on-the-account-page-with-apps-in-the-mac-app-store.html. As the article outlined exactly the problem I had, and had the correct way to Trash the Apps, I was about to get going on this.

But, by chance, I randomly opened Keynote again, and when it said an update was available, do you want to go to the App Store, I said Yes. In the App Store, miraculously, it now said All Apps Were Up To Date. I opened all five and no longer received the pop-up notification that an update of the App was pending. The little red circle with a 5 in it was no longer showing on the App Store Icon. An overall success.

So the bottom line, for me at least, was to: Proceed to the App Store, Click on Profile (human icon on bottom left of screen), Click to indicate "Acceptance" of the 5 updates. Proceed to the Updates Section and Select Update All again. Then proceed on and learn about your equipment, customize, etc. And for me, within 24 hours it seems to have decided then to proceed with these App updates, and all is well.

From the various stories and conversations on line, this "bug" seems to be a little different for different people. Some do not even see the option to "Accept". My advice is try to "Accept" if you see the option, select "Update" and wait 24h to see if it goes through. If not, the remove/reinstall option looks like the way to go, and if that is necessary, the MacWorld guidance seems to be the most complete, from my perspective.

Hope this helps some other new MacBook Air owners. I know I appreciated the guidance I found in various places online, and it was nice too to see that I was not alone on this. We hope that Apple can look into this and correct this issue, as for me, this was the only real "glitch" in getting going with the new MacBook Air.

As a follow up: When subsequently checking on the App Store, under a listing of the favourite free Apps, it showed these 5 Apps as part of the listing, but instead of an Open button beside the name, it had a Download button, as though the 5 Apps were not loaded on the machine, even though they were, and they were apparently up to date. I selected each one (one at a time) and downloaded them. In the Launchpad, it showed the existing icon being re-downloaded. After the re-download, these 5 Apps were then listed, as hoped, with an Open button beside their entry in the App Store listing of favourite free Apps. They also run fine from the Launch Pad.
