Minolta QMS Magicolor 2210 Laser Printer

What solutions are there to print to a Minolta QMS Magicolor 2210 Laser Printer from a Mac running the latest Mac OS? (Mojave, I think it's called, at the current time)

Ideally, printing would be via the LAN to the printer's built in LAN port (and would allow the Mac to serve the printer up to iOS devices as well!). I have a little parallel port to ethernet print server that I'm considering using, but that's a serious kludge that I'd rather avoid. I've tried configuring the Mac to just print "generic postscript" but I haven't managed to get anything to print. Yes, I can ping the printer fine, it just won't accept anything the Mac sends to it, or so it would seem. I've searched the web high & low for any solution, and found nothing other than an old note from Minolta saying that the printer is EOL and I'm SOL. That's a seriously asinine response to customers who dropped ~$2500 for a pro level printer. :-(

I mean, COME ON! My HP Laser Jet II from 1985 still works! :-p

It turns out that Mac OS likes to carp the bed a lot. Fortunately, in this case, there's a solution:

COMPLETELY RESET THE PRINTING SYSTEM

  1. From the  Apple menu choose “System Preferences” and select the Printers & Scanners preference panel.
  2. Control+Click (or right click) in the left side printer list and select “Reset printing system…”.
  3. Re-add all the printers (following John Lockwood's instructions above).

Hmm.

This is an old model and I could certainly expect there is no official Mojave compatible driver for it but I would expect the Generic Postscript driver to work.

I did a quick search and it seems it has a parallel port and an Ethernet port, it is also listed as having (genuine) Postscript support.

I would try manually adding this printer, that is rather than using the 'Default' icon in Add Printers do the following.

  1. Click on the 'IP' icon
  2. Type in the TCP/IP address of the printer, you can either view this on the LCD panel of the printer or via the same LCD panel print out the configuration page
  3. First try using IPP as the protocol and next time if IPP does not work try LPD
  4. Leave the queue blank
  5. Type whatever you want in Name and Location
  6. Use Generic for the driver

At a guess it might not support IPP which is the more common option these days and that might be what the 'Default' icon is using. Hence the suggestion to also try LPD aka LPR.
