Apple TV turning off by itself while streaming music from iPhone

I had this problem on my Apple TV 4K; but updating to tvOS 13.3.1 fixed it.

Same issue. For over a year we've been streaming Spotify from an iPhone or iPad, and it would stream as long as we wanted for hours. The screensaver was the album cover, and the AppleTV's default screensaver (flyover) never came on. But now, the AppleTV 4K shuts down according to its sleep settings, and it isn't recognizing that when AirPlay is active that something is actively being watched or listened to. It doesn't shut down when watching movies or playing music through any app on the AppleTV itself - it's strictly AirPlay that has the premature shutdown issue.

This is an iOS issue because it also happens with any music streaming app (Pandora, SoundCloud, Amazon Music, etc). The developers need to submit a bug ticket that was introduced in tvOS 13 that didn't exist prior. Also, any statement that this is a feature is incorrect. According to AirPlay documentation, it's not supposed to let the device go into sleep mode.

Must be a bug. Happens to me with both mac and iPhone. The picture of the album cover does not appear on the tv, and it thinks that it is inactive, screen saver comes on and then it turns off. I have to sit there with the remote and press it before it happens so it doesn't interrupt the music stream.

Had the same issue when streaming from Spotify, then my boyfriend suggested that I check if Spotify had made an Apple TV app and they did. So Apple probably removed all previous functionality to stream music from our phones so we’d use the app instead.

Please fix this Apple!

I went and bought a new tv thinking it was my tv shutting down only to find it was the apple tv going to sleep.

It makes no sense for the apple tv to go to sleep while being used as an airplay device.

I've had this issue with streaming music from my iphone to Apple TV since before the new update. I know I can choose the "5 hour" option, but it should know that it's active when I'm streaming music. I want Apple TV to shut off after an hour if it's not in use, not wait 5 hours, so this is not a solution to this problem. Smart phone + smart TV should be able to hand this simple option on its own.

I’m still having this same problem. Super annoying when my Apple TV kept shutting off during Friendsgiving. Since resolved by using the Apple TV Spotify app, but how do I change songs if I’m not sitting in front of tv?!

FYI - Chrome Cast doesn't do this. You can just cast from Spotify to the TV if you have a newer TV

This is super frustrating. I'm playing back audio to one or more Apple TVs in my house from my computer using AirPlay / iTunes and the Apple TVs just turn off after a while. I'm not using anything outside of the Apple ecosystem. Multiple-device AirPlay is the main reason I have 2 Apple TVs. Fix your stuff.

I have same issue when streaming from iPad. Both AppleTV and iPad are running version 13.

My workaround is to set the sleep time on the Apple TV to 5 hours.

I'm having this same problem. It didn't do this before tvOS 13.

Yup have done and that did solve it. Shouldn't be an issue in the first place though. The device is actively playing back so should not go to sleep.
