Turning Apple TV 4K on/off with smart plug

Hi all

Before you all say ‘why?’ or ‘do you know you can sleep the ATV and your TV via the remote?’ Yes I do and I want to know if turning it off at the wall WITHOUT putting it to sleep hurts it in any way.... lol.

So I have smart plugs and I know that if you turn on the power to ATV it automatically starts and turns the TV HDMI to the same channel. So by asking Alexa to ‘turn on the Apple TV’ I can turn on the smart plug and have the TV automatically switch to the Apple TV. (Siri did this via the HomePod but sadly my HomePod developed a fault and I didn’t think the £300 was worth it. HomeKit devices in the UK are too sparse and expensive.)

This is fine as it works well, and if I want I can still ‘sleep’ the ATV which also turns off the TV.

HOWEVER .... I like to turn off my devices as I don’t have enough plugs and have always switched between PS4/Xbox, ATVon the same circuit.

So the question is this ....

CAN I safely ask Alexa to ‘turn off the ATV’ knowing that its not in sleep mode at all?

I know there are no hard disks inside and that it won’t be streaming anything or updating at the time. It’s just the sudden switch off at the wall.

yes we have all done it ... but will it harm the device or is it fine?

I can’t find anything online at all.

Of course I can sleep it first then turn the switch off via Alexa. This is what I normally did but involved stretching behind the TV. Remote switch off is far easier.

thanks in advance .....

Putting the device in sleep mode allows it to save the current state neatly, and terminate many processes.

Cutting power without warning skips that step, and I expect that the Apple TV will have to do some system maintenance when started again. If the Apple TV was writing to storage at that moment, then some file may get corrupted, which may or may not get detected before called upon. They didn’t add a power switch intentionally; Apple intends the device to not be cut off from power abruptly and frequently.
