Hi my daughter has an iphone 5s which I understand isn't compatible with ios13, but I can't figure out how to get 12 on. We will need to do it via itunes due to lack of space but it just keeps trying to download ios13. Don't worry Santa will be bringing her something more up to date :)

What is the model number under Settings->General->About->Model?
Also check what iOS version the the iPhone is currently running in Settings->General->About->Version

I missed the part where he said iTunes keeps trying to download iOS 13. I'm wondering if the phone is actually iPhone SE instead of 5s?
If you are unable to update over the air, connect her iPhone to your home computer and do the update using iTunes. You can update a 5s to iOS 12.4.2.

I have the phone connected to my Macbook .. it starts downloading ios 13 then after around 5 mins just stops with no message and shows as attachment .. I also have an iphone and have done many upgrades so this isn't something I'm new to :)
If you click on the download arrow at the top right corner of iTunes it should tell you a bit more about the error with the download or any progress if its still actually downloading. And if its stopped maybe let you resume it.
Itunes has now download the update but then said iPhone Firmware Not Compatible :( there are responses to this on line I will take a look at that unless someone has a quick fix - thanks for all your responses so far
Update is now installing! Strangely it's working on my old Windows pc but not my Macbook .. maybe because the Windows laptop hardly has anything on it and it was a clean install of itunes.
Anyway it's now installing. Thanks everyone you did at least make me realise ios13 will go on her 5SE, so all help appreciated.
Hi, sorry for the confusion it is in fact an SE when I checked the model number.. current ios is 11.4.1
