I've had this issue for months.. even though iCloud is set up just fine on my Mac and everything works fine, including receiving iCloud emails in Mail, I cannot send emails using my iCloud account.
Here's the error I get:

If the above doesn't work, try deleting the account and adding it back in Mail/Preferences/Accounts.

@Eric Root thank you for trying to help... unfortunately none of the above solutions worked (I had tried all that in that past as well, anyways, though I did try it all out again...)
