macOS Catalina TV app not showing my iTunes library

I updated my MacBook Pro to 10.15 (Catalina) today and the new TV app isn't showing me my iTunes library, which includes a very large number of movies and TV shows. The Library tab shows empty placeholders for the 18 movies that I had downloaded, but no actual movie thumbnails, just the movie names and an empty box for each one. Oddly, the Watch Now tab shows my recently played and purchased movies and TV shows, and if I search for a movie that I own I get a movie page with a Play button, so it knows I own the movie. I tried signing out and back in to iCloud and rebooting, but nothing helps.

I had similar problems and found a solution via apple support call The problem was with my login items. I shutdown and restarted in safe mode. (Hold shift key while restarting until login screen appears) After opening the TV app, all the thumbnails appeared. I then removed my 4 login items (AdGuard, Dropbox, Clean-myMac, and Audio Hijack Scheduler) and restarted in regular mode. All the thumbnails were populated in the TV app. I'll be adding back the startup items one at a time to see which one it is.

I had the problem of all of my tv shows/movies gone from Apple TV and didn't show on the TV App either. I connected it through media locations, under preference in the TV App and still nothing happened. Under the TV App I clicked organize library, then clicked file- Import and it imported all my movies and tv shows. The thing is, it now has my tv shows as movies, kind of a drag, but I can live with it.

One of the best test mechanisms, is to create a new clean administrator account on your computer; I usually call mine Admin, or Emergency. Anyhow, it will ask you to into your Apple ID, do that. Log in to only that user on the Mac, and launch TVapp, do all it asks to become you. This gets around anything in your previous library that could be blocking the clean load of your movie and such. hope this works. larry

I did a little more digging in the Console. It appears that the new service process AMPLibraryAgent is part of the problem. When I first launch TV app and select the Library tab, the AMPLibraryAgent services clearly tries to reach out to iTunes servers to pull a copy of the library but it returns these error messages that seem to explain part of what's happening:

error	17:31:06.072873-0500	TV	RequireAction failure: ("mediaDomain == MediaDomains::eTVAndMovies")

error	17:31:09.170833-0500	AMPLibraryAgent	**ERROR**: Cloud Purchases Client - MakeRequest(eDAAPDatabaseItemsRequest) failed with status:-128

error	17:31:09.171896-0500	AMPLibraryAgent	**ERROR**: CloudSyncConversation::DoSync() failed! Client:iTunes TV Store Purchases status:-128

I'm assuming this is where the failure occurs. Anyone else seeing this?

To reproduce...

  • in the TV app click the "Watch Now" tab
  • quit the TV app
  • open Console
  • in the console search field type in "AMPLibraryAgent" press enter and type in "TV" press enter
  • for each search term, change the dropdown from "Any" to "Process"
  • click "Clear" from the toolbar to clear all messages
  • launch the TV app
  • click the "Library" tab
  • go back to Console and leave it alone for 2-3 minutes

You should have all the messages. You can select them all with Cmd-A then copy and paste them into a TextEdit document for review.

Absolutely not. One of apple tests, is to create another admin user, I give it names like: Emergency, Zeus, and so on. That admin use is clean from all the library crap in your normal account, and should operate perfectly. Keep it simple, only put in the information needed for your Apple ID. If you do this, and test Atv, it goes a long way towards a phone tech understanding how deep your problem is. If this fails, the answer becomes an erase and clean reinstall, in my opinion. My server comment is from knowing something about server farms and patience, I know nothing about Apple's server farms.

I think I may have stumbled onto something. I have done all recommended procedures below even resetting my ATV completely with no result except....when I removed the content restrictions, all my media "appeared". repeated this a number of times and viola!! Not sure if this is a glitch or not but this at least gave me my library back. The only issue i still have is that the ATV does not allow "this content to be played" as there is apparently an HDCP issue where the ATV does not recognise that the content is legit.

I take that last part back - about this being about code in the macOS TV app.

I just authorized iTunes in Windows 10 and also iTunes on High Sierra on an older Mac mini. Purchases are not available except thru the "Purchased" menu on macOS or "Family Purchases" on Windows.

iTunes on Windows provides additional feedback in the form of an activity message: "Purchases - We couldn't make your purchases available. Click on the retry button." I tried clicking this button several times. It appears to be doing something but keeps returning the same error.

So I agree with @livingthelava. Apple has broken not only the macOS Catalina TV app, but they've also broken iTunes 12.x with some kind of server-side changes. AND it's becoming increasingly clear that the team in charge of iTunes/TV app didn't do ANY unit-testing for large iTunes purchase libraries on macOS and Windows.

I created a new admin user and wonder of wonders was able to log into TV app and see all of my purchased library. So..... now, if I want to watch anything from my library, I'm restricted to being logged into the new user account... unable to access anything else from the old user account. Is there anyway to merge the data, files etc to the new user account and delete the old one?
