Since installing Catalina yesterday, multiple crashes from userspace watchdog timeout

Since I installed Catalina yesterday, I have had around five crashes with the error:

panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff7f8879cad5): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.WindowServer in 140 seconds

Any solutions. iMac Pro had been operating fine before update. Only apps running at the time were Chrome and TimeMachine backing up to a Drobo 5N2 (plus of course background apps like Google Backup and Sync, Dropbox, etc).

This happens to me reliably when i have an external monitor connected though a docking station and system is idle. If i have a video or other non static content displaying on the external monitor, my MacBook Pro I9 does not crash. This is new for Catalina and same configuration did not crash on Mojave. Need a fix...

While the problem is occurring is best I believe.
So as mentioned I kept a terminal window open, and when the hang started ran the sysdiagnose command in terminal as the key sequence didn't seem to get a sysdiagnose.

So still seeing these even with the very latest updates. The key shortcut for sysdiagnose is either not being seen or not completing before the watchdog reboots the systems.

Interesting that you can still get to terminal, other than mouse everything is frozen on mine.

It took me several attempts to get a sysdiagnose through. I suggest you keep trying via terminal (having it already open) if you can get to it.

Everyone in general should get the Apple Feedback Assistant app and submit this problem. The more submitted the more they might pay attention.

Of course if you get a sysdiagnose attach it to the report in Feedback Assistant.

I think it's clear there are several causes for this, as in my case I'm no longer having this problem after updating to the latest OS. I do have a couple of apps crashing fairly frequently (Roon and Screenflow so far) but I'll take that over system crashes.

A few months old Mac puts you in the winners circle if apple stores are around you and open. Bring it into them and have them fix it. They run advanced diags and will likely find it if it's a HW problem. If a SW problem perhaps they can capture it and escalate it... It's hassle but... if HW you definitely want it fixed while under warrantee. Or you want to eliminate HW as the cause.

Yeah, will do that. Already spoke to support. Last crash yesterday, trying to shut it down (no external devices connected) was the definitive motive to do so:

I tried everything! PRAM NVRAM ... No success. I just found out yesterday that in my case the sleep / wake up issue only exist when the power plug is connected. My Mac not connected to the power cable behaves normally. In Mac Rumors they told me not to worry and that it is not a hardware issue. Still doubting if bringing it in to service. Problem is the being without working tool for a week or so.....

Jun 8, 2020 2:51 AM in response to ProfessorScott

This problem has still not been resolved. I installed Catalina last week (15.5) and whenever I leave my computer for more than 2 minutes it will restart. Also with same errors as mentioned in this chain. Working on an iMac Pro of 2019, with 4 4k LG displays on USB C.

From what I've read in this thread the current Catalina 15.6 Beta doesn't fix this. Does anyone know if they are at least prioritizing fixing this issue for the full release? My understanding is that the full release will happen around WWDC which happens on June 22. I'm just trying to figure out if it's worthwhile to do a clean Catalina install or not, although I have read that the issue persists with a clean install.

Unfortunately you wont (shouldnt) see any comments from anyone on the Beta due to its privacy agreement. Anything mentioned here is also removed by the Moderators.

... and yes I have tried a clean install on my Mac Pro (iBin) some months ago. It didn't help me although some have reported improvements. You could potentially install on to a USB SSD and boot from that to test without disrupting existing install.

Ok, I have been able to resolve the issue:

First of all, when I detach my 4 LG 4K screens, the system does not cause to "panic" and the restart does not occur.

That is obviously not a solution, as I have these screens for a reason.

Step 1:

I have reset the SMC & the Pram (or whatever these things are called).

Step 2:

I have opened the Terminal application and have typed: "Caffeinate -u -d" as per suggestion of somebody above.

As long I don't close the Terminal application, the system does not "Panic" and doesn't restart.

I think it is quite klunky that a solution like this is necessary, but it works for me...

Jun 11, 2020 8:09 AM in response to TheForensicGuy

I just setup two LG 4K (27UL850) monitors today and started experiencing this issue on my 16" MBP.

I crash when going to sleep or turning off my displays 100% of the time when the laptop is in clamshell mode and BOTH monitors connected.

I don't crash when only one monitor is connected or both are connected and the laptop is open.

Both are connected via USB-C. I tried using a USB-C to DP adaptor for one of the monitors but it didn't make a difference.

I tried disabling my spotlight index and it unfortunately didn't help :(

I'm receiving the same kernel panic error that most people are reporting:

panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff7f8879cad5): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.WindowServer in 140 seconds

If I come across anything I'll post any results I find, and I'm happy to try out things to troubleshoot the problem.

Since installing Catalina yesterday, multiple crashes from userspace watchdog timeout
