How do you get iTunes remote for iPhone to work i Catalina ?

Terrible, non-intuitive UI...
Here's how I got it to work. (on Catalina 10.15.2 and iOS 13.3):
- Have the Phone and Mac on the same network.
- (on the iPhone) Open "iTunes Remote" App
- In upper right, tap [Settings]
- Tap "Add an iTunes Library". (It will show a 4 digit code) LEAVE THE IPHONE ON THIS SCREEN
- (on the Mac) Open iTunes... oops, I mean the "Music" app
- Look under the heading "Devices" for the name of your Phone (with a black square "play" icon next to it). Your phone will probably also be listed below it with a "phone" icon... ignore that.
- Click on the "Play" icon and name of your phone.
- The Mac will now show you a screen where you can enter the 4 digit code from Step 4. Enter the code.
- Done. You can now control Music from your Mac with your Phone.
Oh, what a terrible road this has been.

when you fire up the manual remote pairing the icon shows up in between the Library and Playlists section.
This worked flawlessly for me - no need to reinstall the Remote app. Thank you, Remco!

My mistake. I stupidly assumed my Mac was up to date as I had selected automatic updates. I am now on 10.15.2 and remote works perfectly. Thanks for your instructions
nb. You will not have a devices heading in the sidebar until you actually plug a device into the Mac. I use the Mac to charge and sync my phone, so I have a cable permanently attached.
Turn off the Home Sharing option in the Remote app. That should leave you with the connection to the library that works.

How did you start that "add remote for iPhone" feature ?
now i got it ! i had to deactivate "private freigabe" on my mac, than start remote on iPhone, code on display entering on mac, it works.
This suggestion worked perfectly! I can control iTunes Music 100%
This worked after I updated both my Mac OS and my iOS. As you aptly noted, "Oh, what a terrible road this has been." I finally have a working remote for the Apple Music app.
