iMac keeps crashing after Catalina upgrade

I have a 2019 iMac (Core i9, 64GB of RAM, Radeon Pro Vega 48, 2TB SSD) that I upgraded to Catalina. I thought everything was working fine until I stepped away from my computer for about half an hour and came back to the log in screen; upon logging in, it said my computer had restarted. Submitted the crash report to Apple. I thought it was a glitch. Kept working, then later on, same thing happened. Stepped away, and came back to the same thing. Submitted the crash report to Apple again. Then it happened again. And again. And again. Today, same thing; computer keeps crashing, over and over and over.

I've changed nothing in terms of hardware or software between yesterday and today (or since I set up this iMac a few months ago), except for upgrading to Catalina. Under Mojave, there were no issues.

If anyone has any idea how to resolve this, that would be greatly appreciated!

Below is one of the many, many crash reports, but they all look similar in terms of it seeming to be related to com.apple.WindowServer:

If you have the same issue as OP (the machine crashes reliably when you leave it alone for about 10 minutes, you probably have multiple external screens), I've made some progress. If your problem isn't like that (most of the comments here don't seem to be) YMMV, but I wouldn't expect this to help you.

The short version is, that I've made the crashes stop by deleting my Google accounts (and a weird looking null 'Contacts' account that was in the same list) from System Preferences | Internet Accounts. I'm currently re-adding my email addresses one by one to see if the crashing starts again. But there are thousands of mails to download, so it'll take a while before I can say whether that's safe.

I came to this conclusion by installing a fresh version of Catalina next to my main install. I couldn't reproduce the issue in the fresh install; no crashing. Then I gradually added apps and services one by one, leaving the machine alone for a while after each thing. If I came back and the session was still alive, I knew that app or service hadn't caused the problem. The crashing only started when I enabled my email accounts on that Preferences screen. Deleting them stopped the crashing (disabling them wasn't enough).

I hope this helps somebody out.

I am following this thread closely. Luckily I do not have the same crashing problem as you folk, [touch wood, you know what will happen now], 27 in iMac 14,2 Late 2013 but just thought I may be able offer some info on the Paragon app. Of course I do not know if that is any culprit. But I just recall seeing a mention of it in my database somewhere so thought I would point anyone in the direction if they thought useful.

Carbon Copy Cloner 4 Release Notes Documentation pages 22 and 242. I am sure you don't have to be a CCC user to find the document. It seems to be a problem app.

Again I do not know if this is relevant, just trying to contribute.

Just checking back in for the third time on this issue happening to BOTH of my iMac Pros. Still no solve and it continues to happen, losing valuable work this is insane- unlike previous years when random crashes would happen, Photoshop can't even recover the work lost.

The only NEW info I have is that for the first time, after one recent restart on one of the machines, i submitted the usual crash log and then immediately after, the attached window popped up specifying a sleep/ wake error. That primarily seems to happen on one of the two machines- the other one is used more heavily and its crashing in the middle of working on it, so i know the sleep issue isn't the exact culprit, but this the first new bit of evidence i've gotten since this first started.

APPLE- HELP

Crash 4 of the morning just today. Like others I used to use my computer for other things than web browsing. Like finances. Luckily for me my phone still works. IT won’t even stay running long enough for me to search for a solution without beach balling and restarting. Seriously though I was about to upgrade from my MBP to an iMac Pro but now am looking at PC as my Mac is just a pretty paperweight.

On a side note I’ve tweeted Apple and even been to the Apple store just to make sure it wasn’t a hardware issue.

I thought I left the frequent crashes behind me but yesterday was another pretty bad day with performance lacks and crashes all over the place. In the last days it was pretty stable but now it's back in crashing mode.

The only thing I did was starting parallels and launching windows and everything started all over again. This needs serious fixing from Apple. I am also thinking about buying a Windows PC or replacing Catalina with a windows installation. I am expecting a better performance if I buy an overpriced tool where the big advantage supposed to be that hard- and software work seamless.

Same problem on all my Macs:

macbook pro 2018

Mac pro 2013

Mac pro 2020 !!!!

It's repeatable and crippling.

What disaster ! Was Catalina seriously tested ?

I will roll back on the older machines but what about the new Mega expensive Mac pro. Also I have a dependency on Photos and I've upgraded the photo archives and I can't risk a failure on migrating them back.

We Photoshop InDesign, FinalCut and Photos are crashing.

Every fix suggested by apple is ... well what can I say! What a screw up - I hope Apple pays for this.

On a side note Catalina has caused my Time Capsule backups to now be corrupt. This is preventing me from rolling the system back. It won’t even stay up long enough to copy my files off. Where’s Apple aren’t you monitoring your “support communities” this is a disaster. I’m about to lose years of pictures, music and family videos. Chances of both the MacBook and Time Capsule failing simultaneously are remote. Never figured the OS would actually corrupt them. I feel if Apple would have tested this OS these problems would have been made aware or maybe they did test and were aware and have just lost sight of the consumer focus they once had when Jobs was the CEO. Now they are just in a hurry to release something new instead of something great.

@jrpmedia how did you get macOS Catalina 10.15.3 beta 3 ?

On both my Apple Developer portal and public betas all I can find is macOS Catalina 10.15.3 beta 2.

My MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) MacBookPro10,1with 2TB OWC SSD always crashes everytime on wake if my Energy Saver Computer sleep setting is enabled.

Crash report always display IOAHCIBlockStorageDriver::CommandTimeout!

I suspected 3rd party drivers but I do NOT see any likely culprits such as NTFS drivers.

At this point I would try Beta 3 if it might actually allow me to use Energy Saver Computer sleep setting again without crashing.

Ok, I'll try safe mode shortly (although this has been happening since I got everything replaced too).

How frequently do you think it should be rebooted, interested to understand this because I've used Mac for many years, but when I moved over from a PC, one of the good things was that there was no expectation to keep rebooting to 'keep it fresh' like there used to be with Windows.

Yep, had that latest LastPass version - just used AppCleaner to uninstall it which has removed the app and the Safari extension.

I don't have much in login items anyway?
