iMac keeps crashing after Catalina upgrade

I have a 2019 iMac (Core i9, 64GB of RAM, Radeon Pro Vega 48, 2TB SSD) that I upgraded to Catalina. I thought everything was working fine until I stepped away from my computer for about half an hour and came back to the log in screen; upon logging in, it said my computer had restarted. Submitted the crash report to Apple. I thought it was a glitch. Kept working, then later on, same thing happened. Stepped away, and came back to the same thing. Submitted the crash report to Apple again. Then it happened again. And again. And again. Today, same thing; computer keeps crashing, over and over and over.

I've changed nothing in terms of hardware or software between yesterday and today (or since I set up this iMac a few months ago), except for upgrading to Catalina. Under Mojave, there were no issues.

If anyone has any idea how to resolve this, that would be greatly appreciated!

Below is one of the many, many crash reports, but they all look similar in terms of it seeming to be related to com.apple.WindowServer:

If you have the same issue as OP (the machine crashes reliably when you leave it alone for about 10 minutes, you probably have multiple external screens), I've made some progress. If your problem isn't like that (most of the comments here don't seem to be) YMMV, but I wouldn't expect this to help you.

The short version is, that I've made the crashes stop by deleting my Google accounts (and a weird looking null 'Contacts' account that was in the same list) from System Preferences | Internet Accounts. I'm currently re-adding my email addresses one by one to see if the crashing starts again. But there are thousands of mails to download, so it'll take a while before I can say whether that's safe.

I came to this conclusion by installing a fresh version of Catalina next to my main install. I couldn't reproduce the issue in the fresh install; no crashing. Then I gradually added apps and services one by one, leaving the machine alone for a while after each thing. If I came back and the session was still alive, I knew that app or service hadn't caused the problem. The crashing only started when I enabled my email accounts on that Preferences screen. Deleting them stopped the crashing (disabling them wasn't enough).

I hope this helps somebody out.

Lol! Absolutely not - of course I'm not 'right' neither are you! I also have a 2012 Mac Mini which is running Catalina without a single problem. All we're saying in this thread is that a certain number of users are having stability issues with Catalina. There are similar posts all over the internet. Are you saying there isn't a problem? Do you know any 2017 4K iMac users who have no issues? Are any of your stable Macs this particular model?

I have read every single post on this thread.

Seeing you read every post, one would think you noticed those having an issue are not limited to 2017 iMacs. What I have is an iMac Pro, two 5K iMacs, a MacBook and a MacBook Air. Some of which others are having an issue with.

Alternatively, give up and move to Windows

Personally, I think you should follow your own advice.

Why the hostility? Are you one of those people who hate seeing any posts which criticise Apple in any way? I have indeed followed my own advice and bought a Windows desktop. I want a resolution to the issues I've been having so I can sell my iMac and recoup some of the money I spent on the Windows machine. Of course I have noticed others are having issues with a range of Macs. A friend bought the latest and greatest MacBook Pro and had the same issues out of the box. I'm really not sure what you are saying, TBH.

I'm fed up with Apple.

I don't have time to play with configurations and tests. I have to work. Respect timeline. Earn money.

I'm not a beta tester.

I deep clean the mac, disable every 32 bits things, and disable all possibly options that causes bugs ...

My main computer work flawlessly with Mojave and now with Catalina, it's a knightmare.

In office I use a Windows 10 machine too and it' hard to say, but it just work !!!

Apple REALLY sucks right now !!!

I didn't use any beta software. Just the standard upgrade process. Had a few stops and starts downloading and kicking off the 10.15.0 version, but OK with the 10.15.1 and 10.15.2 version. Then the MBP turned up its toes and cashed in its chips! Never got to 10.15.3. But I was using dual monitors almost all the time, in two different configurations, and a video projector in class. Crashed in all configurations.

I noticed during the initial Catalina update that the machine appears to go stupid/black screen for 10 to 15 minutes. I suspect that certain update operations, possibly firmware updates, were gong on silently. I had the urge to power clear/restart but resisted. The upgrade finally, finally continued visibly. I fault Apple for not making some kind of notification. If I had hit the power button, would I have blown the firmware update? Who knows? I'm glad that I was patient. I do not have crashes. I have noticed that USB devices (printers, scanners, iPhone) sometimes do funny things. Sometimes my backup drive gets lost by TimeMachine, which has never happened before. Is it the USB subsystem? Or the I/O system in general? .... the beat goes on.

Hello,

Three causes of crash here :

  1. panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f87a4bf3f): @/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/IOUSBHostFamily_Drivers/IOUSBHostFamily-800.80.1/AppleUSBXHCI/AppleUSBXHCITransferRing.cpp:220
  2. /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/PhotoAnalysis.framework/Versions/A/Support/photoanalysisd
  3. /System/Library/Frameworks/Quartz.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/QuickLookUI.framework/Versions/A/XPCServices/QuickLookUIService.xpc/Contents/MacOS/QuickLookUIService

For several years i use my Mac mini as a pro photo editor with creative cloud, very stable with Sierra and High Sierra, when i upgrade to Catalina early January no more work done. Crash after crash, sometimes at restart. Downgrade do Mojave, exactly the same issue. When exporting a job with around 1500 photos, after 30 seconds, crash, then again and another crash, impossible to work. Last night i tried reinstall Catalina and even that i can't do, return error saying "can't remove old version"... come on Apple, you are making pro's and customers lose faith in the brand and switch.
