iMac keeps crashing after Catalina upgrade

I have a 2019 iMac (Core i9, 64GB of RAM, Radeon Pro Vega 48, 2TB SSD) that I upgraded to Catalina. I thought everything was working fine until I stepped away from my computer for about half an hour and came back to the log in screen; upon logging in, it said my computer had restarted. Submitted the crash report to Apple. I thought it was a glitch. Kept working, then later on, same thing happened. Stepped away, and came back to the same thing. Submitted the crash report to Apple again. Then it happened again. And again. And again. Today, same thing; computer keeps crashing, over and over and over.

I've changed nothing in terms of hardware or software between yesterday and today (or since I set up this iMac a few months ago), except for upgrading to Catalina. Under Mojave, there were no issues.

If anyone has any idea how to resolve this, that would be greatly appreciated!

Below is one of the many, many crash reports, but they all look similar in terms of it seeming to be related to com.apple.WindowServer:

I followed classic (dumb) debug practice of changing two things simulaneaously last week. My "top cover" on my MBP 2017 was replaced (logic board previously replaced), and I also unplugged a USB hub with my time machine HDD on it. Doing these two things has left me three days without a crash, (as opposed to 1-2 per day). I'm going to plug the USB devices back in next week..... FWIW

I have a MacBook Pro (16 inch, 2019) for a week. If I knew that, I would never spend $ 2,799.

The way is to keep using my old Macbook Pro 13 "running Mojave.

Frustrating when it comes to an Apple product.

@edudadod

suggest you take it back andget a refund asap.

some people in this site have been having issues for months, and it pains me to say this as a long time Apple user.

Save yourself some grief and get a refund then check back after each release and see if the problems have gone away, then replace the old machine at that time.

With so many people having to get logic board replacements that don't help, and confirming that fresh installs don't help, it feels like Apple owes us an apology. Half a year without being able to use one of the most basic peripheral add-ons is crazy.

I've been a loyal Apple user for decades, and I'm currently sitting with a maxed out iMac Pro that I can't use for my daily work. This is the issue that's finally breaking me.

I have a 2012 MBP that I spent nearly 5k on when it was new. It literally was the best one you could buy. I justified the expense because it never crashed and that I wouldn’t need to replace it every couple years. Recently I was in the market for an iMac Pro looking to spend about 6k but decided not to after my MBP turning into a paper weight since Catalina. Will wait until they get the issues worked out and if still crashing then I’ll just build a nice PC and save the cash.

My iMac was rendered unusable so I bought an Intel NUC8i5BEH and a 4K monitor. Windows 10 is rock solid - much more so than macOS these days - and I'm enjoying using it. Better still, the NUC itself was £375 ($452) so to upgrade in the future that's all I'll need to replace. It attaches to the back of the monitor and comes with a VESA mounting plate. I love it! My iMac is now in a cupboard. What a waste of money that was.

Even with a fresh install of Catalina the restarts due to kernel panics continue. I dont know what to do.

Now I tried to remove one of two RAM sticks (2x 8GB) to observe if the restarts will stop; I had did it some time ago and the machine runned well, but I put the stick back again later

I will keep you updated, even know that this solution can't be applyed to everyone

P.S.: Restarting has already corrupted the data on my external hard drive several times.

Fix it NOW Apple!

(I have a late 2012 Mac Mini + 1 Thunderbolt Display)

I had the same problem with my late 2012 Macmini, it's been a struggle since January, last week, by chance, i found the original memory sticks (2+2gb) so i removed the Crucial 8+8gb and tried the 2+2... no way, its working fine. Did several tests mixing and switching dimms and slots and found the problem was one of the 8gb stick, now i'm working with 8+2gb and its working fine, did already ordered a new 8gb dimm.

My Mac Mini is working fine since I removed one of the two sticks. I tried to use an 8 GB stick with the original 2 GB stick, but the reboots continued.

I don't think the quality of the combs is the cause of the problem, I had been using them for years without problems until I screwed up by installing Catalina. In addition, the two combs work well, as long as they are alone. And they work in any of the slots.

I think it's some problem with how this version of the MacOS manages memory

my iMac (2012) was crashing every 15 mins and i have externals and the only time it started to do this was after i upgraded to Catalina. I tried pretty much all of the things suggested on various posts but nothing help, including trying out the beta. I finally downgraded to Mojave and am happy to report that my iMac hasnt crashed for the last 24 hours. I followed the instructions on macworld.uk site on how to download the OS mojave and how to create bootable installable on a usb flash drive and was successfully able to complete the downgrade. All it cost me was the price of a flash drive. hope this helps others too. i will sit on mojave and not upgrade till Apple fixes Catalina.

Hi,

Have your reported the problem to Apple?

If you have AppleCare have you raised an issue? and if you do, raise the problem again and again.

If you joined the beta program did you send the issue in the correct feedback app?

Just asking because Apple do not care about this channel, so publicly complaining here will not reach anyone and sending crash reports don't seem to do any good either.

They only monitor this forum if you say something you're not supposed to about the beta program, otherwise it's not considered 'official'.

The other option is everyone on here to start complaining very loudly on something like Twitter every time you have a crash and make sure you also send it in a DM to Apple.

This has been going on too long now.

Good luck.

Steve

Y'all resolve this issue?

I'm running a mid-2018 MBP 2.9 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i9, Radeon Pro Vega 20 4 GB and am having the same issue since upgrading to Catalina 10.15.3.

While I can't confirm that it only happens when I use my Caldigit T3 dock with one monitor connected via DisplayPort, it does seem more frequent than when I have them connected through two different Mac and Caldigit HDMI/Displayport adapters.

I spend my days editing documentaries with tons of footage but with proxies so while there is a Thunderbolt RAID attached, it's not doing crazy work...

I've been monitoring RAM and CPU usage and nothing seems too out of whack - my suspicion is that the GPU is getting overheated between the 2 monitors and Premiere and that's what's causing the issue.

Any thoughts?

Mar 27, 2020 3:18 PM in response to GWithers

It's fixed for me .... I'm on a i5 2017 MBP with two external monitors

happily working until Catalina, then daily crashes

swapped TB3 docks - crashes

swapped monitors - crashes

turned off time machine - crashes

turned off various power profiles - crashes

got rid of entire USB tree - crashes

swapped logic board - crashes

swapped "top cover" - no fails for two weeks .....

can't explain - just observation

This Tuesday's update rendered my iMac Pro unusable with it locking up hard every hour or two.

I did a fresh Mojave install and I was running smoothly again with both external monitors active.

I then repeated the upgrade to Catalina and it became unstable again, even without external monitors plugged in.

I've gone back to yet another Mojave fresh install. I guess that's where I live now.

I'm eagerly watching this thread to see if perhaps the next Catalina upgrade will make it stable. :(
