iMac keeps crashing after Catalina upgrade

I have a 2019 iMac (Core i9, 64GB of RAM, Radeon Pro Vega 48, 2TB SSD) that I upgraded to Catalina. I thought everything was working fine until I stepped away from my computer for about half an hour and came back to the log in screen; upon logging in, it said my computer had restarted. Submitted the crash report to Apple. I thought it was a glitch. Kept working, then later on, same thing happened. Stepped away, and came back to the same thing. Submitted the crash report to Apple again. Then it happened again. And again. And again. Today, same thing; computer keeps crashing, over and over and over.

I've changed nothing in terms of hardware or software between yesterday and today (or since I set up this iMac a few months ago), except for upgrading to Catalina. Under Mojave, there were no issues.

If anyone has any idea how to resolve this, that would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry, I lied, it was a power failure (discovered after arriving home). So no panic after 10 days after removing LittleSnitch and Sophos in 10.15.2.

Rampant issue that Apple needs to address. Junked my iMac Pro until I reverted back to Mojave. I don’t have any external monitors connected so really not related to that.

Reverted to Mojave yesterday. All is well now.

External monitors just add to the error rate but the machines will still use the nvidia card with the embedded screen for better performance.

Now I forgot to turn off the external displays. After about an hour the Mac promptly crashed. So it looks like turning the external displays off does prevent this type of crash.

Basically macOS Catalina Version 10.15.2 is junk and the sleep for my MacBook Pro 2017 does not work with peripherals attached using thunderbolt.

Try prefixing sudo to the softwareupdate command. I've used it a few times and it downloads the installer to your Applications folder.

I think you can still download Mojave or High Sierra and install in place of Catalina. You’ll have to delete both the Data and OS partitions prior to install.

Hooray! 10.15.6 fixed the consistent kernel panic crashes when trying to resume from sleep with an external display connected and the lid closed in clamshell mode on my 2019 16" MBP. Good job Apple.
