Catalina install proceeded with insufficient space and locked up computer.

My MacBook is stuck. My Catalina install said “not enough disk space to install” but my original OS start up disk does not show in the selection box. Catalina’s installer should not have let this happen. What’s the easy fix?

This error window has a restart button. Hold down command and R as the computer restarts. This will put you into recovery mode. Use the option to restore from a Time Machine backup. This should use a local snapshot to restore the machine back to 10.14. The restore took less than a minute on my machine.

I had the same issue (see above) and could solve the problem this way:


  1. I installed Mojave on an external drive and booted from this external drive.
  2. Running the Mac again, I saved my files from the macintosh HD (internal HD) to the external device.
  3. After that I deleted the macintosh HD (internal HD) completly and installed Mojave again.
  4. After this I updated to Catalina and copied back my saved files from the external HD.


Hope this work around helps others with the same issue.

Yes, your TimeMachine backup will give you the ‘system’ back, less files related to email, iTunes, Photos and other data linked apps. They do a first run and pull in the data. Recommend updating to Catalina before running those programs. My drive had 6.4gb free and would not install Catalina or reinstalled the last OS back to Mohave due to lack of disk space. (It’s not a disk anymore is it?) But, Time Machine brought Mohave (and desktop, passwords, applications etc.) back successfully. The free space after the restore was now 28gb. Installing the Catalina upgrade as I write this. After that, I’ll run email, Photos and iTunes and pull in the data. I still contend that this was unnecessary if coders at Apple had just made the installer properly measure free space and abort the installation early.

Although I thank you for your suggestion, and I did try it, when trying to install the previous OS the same result occurred. “Not enough disk space.” This is a sad and inept situation that the installer program could have prevented. My complaint is with the OS coders at Apple apparently. Or, with me for having a too full hard drive. I do have active Time Machine backups and it will undoubtedly take all night to finish. The last time I upgraded an OS, the same thing happened, BUT IT DIDN’T LOCK UP THE COMPUTER in a infinity loop. I backed out of the install, off loaded data, and restarted the install. Catalina, and probably the latest Base OS installed by Recovery, are seriously flawed.

I have the same problem:


Catalina installion stucked due insufficent space. Restart with mojave is not possible becaause i can't select any startup volume. if I do a restart anyway, it tries to install Catalina again and stops immediately with the message "no enough disk space".


Tried recovery mode, disk repair (no errors found). Nothing helped.


No TimeMachine backup available.


Tried also to reinstall mojave via recovery mode. Did not work either due "not enough space".


Model: MacbookPro Mid 2017, 128 GB HD


What can I do?


Macintosh HD say it is almost full - with 100GB of data, but this can't be true. The HD is max 30GB full of space

Is there a way to delete (maybe some cache/ temp) files on the macintosh HD - maybe via terminal in recovery mode?
