Math Type

So, when I updated to Mojave a year or so ago, all of my MathType equations in pages and keynote became images. I had to salvage every equation - one at a time in every one of my documents. Now, this morning I have updated to Catalina and have discovered that I am screwed until MathType upgrades their software to MathType 8.

Does anyone out there have a work around? At the moment, can I downgrade back to Mojave? Does Apple not care that they ruin people's work when they do these updates without considering all apps. MathType is promoted by Apple so I don't see how it is justified that they don't consider that product in their updates.

The least pain approach would be a second Mac running High Sierra, or Mojave, and Pages v8.1 with MathType 7. Vendors have had an extended timeframe to prepare 64-bit applications, so waiting for MathType 8 could be tedium.

Then things start to go downhill if you only have one Mac. You can go back to Mojave, or High Sierra — provided that you performed a last Time Machine backup prior to the upgrade, and that you did not reuse that same Time Machine drive to backup Catalina. In theory, you would boot into Recovery and select Restore from Time Machine Backup to wipe the Catalina drive and restore everything as it was before the upgrade. I say in theory as obviously, I have not done this with a retreat from Catalina.

If the second paragraph is a bust, you are looking at a clean install of a supported, prior operating system to replace Catalina, and without a backup, you will lose all data on the existing Catalina installation.

Apple's built-in, aenemic, equation solution is a C++ compiled translator that either passes through MathML, or translates a subset of [LaTeX] syntax into MathML objects in Pages v7.1 and later. It is a nail biting alternative to MathType, and does not address existing MathType equations, but does give one in-line equations. It does not support any [La]TeX packages, so without amsmath, it may frustrate more than reward.

Hello,

it is very nice for me to see that there are more people working with MathType in Pages.

I am absolutely sorry, that I cannot help.

But please allow me to ask one question hoping that someone here had different experiences and can help me.

I hope it is ok. If not, please excuse me.

I worked in El Capitan because I was told that I would have trouble with MathType in Pages (4.3) when updating to a newer version.

A few weaks I was told by Apple that I do not have to fear, I can update to Mojave and it will still work.

So I tried went to High Sierra on one of my macbooks with the consequence that I can read the old Pages files and see, open and edit all the MathType stuff, but whenever I open MathType a lot of warning windows appear in which I get the information "The Text style uses the ‚Times‘ (Plain) font, which is not available.

The ‚Times New Roman‘ (Plain) Font will be substituted."

Whenever I try to change the styles, then click apply and ok, it does not have a sustained effect, because next time I open MathType the settings are as they were before. This is extremely incommode.

So do I really have to go back to El Capitan?

Or can somebody tell me how to change the style so that the changings are saved?

In my opinion it is absolutely bad that apple does not care for an easy usable Pages version including MathType.

Beside from that there is another problem: If I save a Pages file in the iCloud it is impossible to open it again.

Best wishes

I do not have access to MS Word, but built-in equations (not MathType sourced) in Pages v8.2.1 remain editable in LibreOffice Writer 6.3.4.2 — when exported from Pages as .docx. Though editable, the equation syntax is different.

As the Xerces C based blahtex converter used by Pages has not been updated by its third-party developers in several (7) years this may be the weak link for future releases of Pages and document compatibility.

I think this is a very unfair characterization of Apple. I've had my problems with Apple, but I have not upgraded to Catalina because I kept getting warnings that MathType would not not work with it. I am not sure what more they could have done. I had several other apps, including EndNote, that did not get upgraded to 64-bit until virtually the last minute. This is a serious question -- what more would you have wanted Apple to do in addition to giving you that warning dialog box when you ran MathType, and to give the warning before you upgraded to Catalina that that would break 32-bit apps, and to provide instructions on how to check which of your apps are still 32-bit? I guess before installing they could have listed all the apps you have that would not work. It is not necessary to always upgrade to the latest operating system as soon as it comes out. I am sorry for your problem. I truly am. But again, I really want to know what you think Apple could have done differently.

So the moral here is to capture what appeared for me the first time when I tested with different fonts, and Pages v8.2.1 displayed distinct visual differences between font selections. I concur with what you have shown, however I notice that the type of equation has some bearing in whether the characters of the equation change, or remain the same.

Einstein's equation will change character shapes based on a change of fonts:

But other than size, Eulers Theorem does not change when the above fonts are applied:

Hi Mike!

I agree this is a huge bummer. I myself am probably going to wait to update to Catalina as long as possible -- although my employer / IT department has automatic updates turned on, so it might happen without my approval soon.

Either way, not sure if you have read the following from WIRIS/ MathType about the situation, so posting the link just in case:

WIRIS support has been helpful to me in the past also -- their email is support@wiris.com

Best of luck!

Yes, November or December. As a math teacher I like to refine my lesson materials from the previous year. This editing ability has been lost. I need to make new exams - cannot do that. So, it is great to hear that others will be able to upgrade to Catalina in November or December, but that is too far in the future.

As this isn't the first time I have lost years worth of work due to Apple's OS updates, I think two bouts of depression is enough.
