Microsoft Version for iMac 2009

I tried downloading Microsoft 365 in my iMac 2009, which as El Capitan OS, and it wont allow me to. The message I get is that I can't download since I need OS X version 10.12 or later. Which leads me to another problem - I can only download as far as El Capitan.

I tried downloading Sierra OS 10.12.6 but I get the following message: This software is not supported in your system.

After being able to update the OC to El Capitan, my computer indicates it's up to date - so wondering if I am missing any steps or if it's just the computer is too old to update to Sierra as well as add Microsoft 365.

Your computer is very very out of date and has been considered obsolete for many years now. In addition it is reaching the age where getting compatible software that is supported is a problem. You can look for alternatives such as the free web based MS Office clones or even using Pages & Numbers which is Apple's alternative or searching E-bay for old versions of Office for Mac that are supported by your current OS but that is dicey.

Of course, it may also be wise to consider just replacing the old computer as this problem will not be getting any easier to solve.

Good luck.

An alternative to a new iMac, is a newer model than what you have, like a 2013 or 2015 model. You might find a good deal on a used or refurbished Mac that still has some life in it that is also compatible with the latest macOS and Office, and of course, any essential Will Writing and Tax Preparation software, so you can be prepared for, you know, death and taxes, which are about as certain as computer obsolescence. :-)
